IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people are of the opinion that the only reason to acquire a new language is so you can explore the world or work in an international country, on the other hand some people say this are not the only reason, and i'm agreeing that there are various reasons why individuals learn new languages for educational purposes, personal acheivement and understanding people's culture better.

Learning a foreign language it's not easy, especially when you don't have people that speak the language around you, it requires time, effort and financial resources. so i personally understand if people won't want to go through the stress of leaning a new language only if it will affect them drastically in their lives. Like getting a new job which will require you to communicate with you collegues in the foreign language, if you can't learn the language you can't perform well and this will make you lose your job

But then some people learn new languages without having plans to travel, they just derive some sense of acheivement when they can speak more than one languages, for instance the dulingo app onboards thousands of users to learn new language, it might not be really intense but it allows their users have a steady means of learning by keeping streaks, and somepeople come online to post about having to learn a new language for 365 days.

I'm of the opinion that while some people have a serious reasons for learning a new language like travelling, or working or communicating, some people just wants to learn the language to feel a sense of archivement or understands other people's culture, some people also find it fun when learning a new language e.g people that watch korea film try to emulate or copy their language style.

Overall, i think there are a lot of reasons why people would want to learn a nnew language apart form travelling and working in an international country.

This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'educational purposes', 'personal achievement', and 'financial resources'. There are frequent punctuation and sentence-boundary errors, particularly comma splices and run-on sentences, such as '...financial resources. so i personally understand...' and '...lose your job But then some people...'. Additionally, subject-verb agreement issues occur ('this are not the only reason', 'some people just wants'). While meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the high frequency of basic structural inaccuracies means the text cannot be placed in Band 6, fitting more comfortably at Band 5.0.
