Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on learning a foreign language and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive, which aligns with Band 5 descriptors. The student states, 'Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country,' mirroring the prompt without much expansion. Examples provided, such as the elder brother learning a language for work and study or the author going to Germany, are somewhat vague and lack deeper elaboration. The writer's position is clear in the final paragraph, but the arguments remain underdeveloped throughout the body paragraphs. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to extend their ideas with more specific, well-reasoned explanations and avoid circular phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but lacks clear overall progression and logical linking. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentence transitions are frequently awkward or mechanical. For instance, the second body paragraph awkwardly begins by repeating the prompt phrase, 'However, Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language,' followed by conversational filler like 'See there are so many different reasons.' Cohesive devices are used repetitively or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'some of them just learn language for their own hobby.' The overall flow is disrupted by frequent shifts in thought and fragmented paragraph structures, corresponding to a Band 5 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary that is barely adequate for the task. Words like 'language,' 'learn,' 'reason,' and 'different' are overused throughout the essay. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'study propose' instead of 'study purpose,' 'pausing my bachelor's' instead of 'pursuing my bachelor's,' and 'barrier their' instead of 'barriers there.' While the intended meaning is usually recoverable, these frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect typical Band 5 lexical control. To improve, the student should expand their working vocabulary, learn correct collocations, and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex structures that are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include tense inconsistencies, such as 'My elder brother learn language' instead of 'learned,' and fragmented or run-on structures like 'Different country has different language and culture , region.' Punctuation is also inaccurate, with misplaced commas appearing before spaces and clauses. The frequency of grammatical errors causes noticeable strain and difficulty for the reader, placing the writing squarely at Band 5. To progress, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences, maintain consistent verb tenses, and review basic subject-verb agreement rules.
