IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued by some people that learning an international language is compulsory for travel or work in abroad. Meanwhile, others believe that learning different forein languages is beyond these given reasons. However, I believe that learning foreign language is the basic step to move abroad for work or study purposes.

On the one hand, the supporters of knowledge of foreign language believe that it is the only way to communicate with foreigners while we are travelling or studying abroad. As we can express our ideas clearly and can interact more easily with people of different countries. Take an example of Emma Watson, a leading Hollywood star who once stated that her great success come from learning the foreign language and she can easily communicate with people of different cultures. Thus, a language indeed has an important role in this regard.

While on the other hand, the advocates of knowledge of international language believe that it would become the reason of personal development. As new language will boost our confidence and memory at the same time. For instance in Japan, in 2010, their Education Minister revealed in a conference that around 70% students who got scholarships were confident by self-improvement. Hence, indeed these play a significant role in some other purposes.

However, I believe that knowledge of other languages is important to move abroad for higher education or to work. As it would help them to get more job opportunities for students and workers at the same time.

To sum up, I believe that command on different languages would help us in uderstanding different cultures and also play an important role in communication.
