IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There are more benefits of learning a foreign language, for visiting a foreign country as well as for self improvement. It is more beneficial learning a language of a country where you are going, also learning it for your exposure. In my opinion, infdividual memorizing foreign language is only for work and travel puroses only.
As visiting abroad, learning a foreign language before visiting overcome the language barrier faced by many people. It is much more beneficial for conversation with the local people. If going abroad is for work or travel purposes, its importance is realised when you reached there. For example, ordering a coffee in your native language will be impossile for them to catch you rather than ordering in their language. Some individiuals learns only for such visits, making them confident in their daily life conversations as well as crucial meetings. Moreover, learning becomes necessary when you have to go to other country.
Learning forign languages while staying in your country gives you more exposure of other languages and their standards. You wil gain more knowledge without visiting the country itself. Furthermore, their are high paying jobs for the one who learn multiple languages as there are foreign visitors in your country. You can also promote your culture in different languages as well.
As far as I am concerned, reason for learning foreign language for a specific purpose like work or travel is fine. Nowadays, people are focusing on other things rather than learning a foreign language. Considering it a waste of time and resources.
In conclusion, individuals learning a foreign language for a specific purpose is more beneficial, while self education, promoting culture, gaining knowledge are alsi other reasons for learning foreign language. But in my opinion as discussed earlier, learning a foreign language is only for travel and work reasons only.
