IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Different opinions exist in the scenario of learning a foreign language. One section of society feels that it's only necessary when working or travelling in a different country. The other section feels that there may be another reasons for mastering a foreign language. I myself agree with the latter section and believe that the reasons vary from person to person.

Some people feel that travelling is the reason for learning a foreign language. It makes communication with local people easy and overall travel experience memorable. These people also believe working in a foreign country the reason. It is essential for a clear interaction between you and other employees at work. For example, a company prefers a candidate who can speak the local language. As a result, people get better work opportunities.

Other people believe that different reasons exist for studying a foreign language. A person could do so to pursue his hobby. Mastering a foreign language could give someone a sense of accomplishment. Whereas, someone else would do so to make new international friends. This learning could open new doors of cultural and life experiences for someone. Quoting an example, a person knowing Japanese language can form friendships with Japanese local people online. Consequently, both parties get to know about the other culture.

I myself believe in the latter view that reasons for studying a foreign language differ from person to person. A person could learn different languages to achieve certifications. Citing an example, a person learning Japanese, German and French can get different level certifications. This infact broadens his horizons for the future.

In conclusion, a debate regarding the reasons for studying a foreign language exists in the society. The former view considers only travel or work purposes, whereas the latter view considers the existence of various reasons.
