IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the main cause for understanding an international language is for tourism purpose or to get a job overseas, whereas others believe that there are few more reasons for adapting foreign language.

To commence with, proponents of learning foreign language often claim that it is adapted only for sake of mere wandering and employment. This is primarily beacause of the importance of one's own national or local language that gets all the prestige. One feel pride in its mother tongue or home language and consider it a matter of disrespect to own another language by heart. For example, in China, people are not allowed to speak any other language other than chinese so the citizens only have access to foreign languages while they are travelling or applying for a job outside china.

On the other hand, critics contend that there are more reasin for learning an interantional language. Firstly, foriegn language breaks the communicational barriers between nations and make world a global village where people can access any nation's resources without a second thought. Secondly, in today's age where world is progressing at a very fast pace, international bussinesses have become online, for which we should have a hold on international linguistics. Finally, social media influence, where people find solace and leisure from hectic daily routine, is loaded with information in different languages, food, health, nature, beauty... you name it. People can only access all these if they know thise international languages.

From my perspective, while both views have their own merits, I believe that learning a foriegn laguage can not only be restricted for seeking jobs or planning to travel abroad, but also to enhance international communications, bussionesses and for personal ease and comfort.

The progression of ideas makes the overall arrangement coherent, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6 with some elements of Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'proponents', 'solace', 'hectic', and 'global village'. However, there are notable lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'beacause', 'reasin', 'foriegn', 'bussinesses', and 'languge'. Additionally, collocation and word choice occasionally slip, such as 'adapting foreign language' instead of 'learning a foreign language' and 'hold on international linguistics'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and conditional-like structures. However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to detract from accuracy. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('One feel pride'), missing articles ('in China, people are not allowed to speak any other language other than chinese'), and spelling-related grammatical distractions. While complex sentences are attempted, they are occasionally faulty or awkward.
