IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Language serves as the meduim of communication between people. No matter what regoin, people or language it is, the only purpose of it is to help a person communicate, express or ask. Many people learn a new language when they have to move to a new country, weather they travel to work or study. It is necessary to learn the language where you are moving in order to survive for example if you move to a new country you have to meet new people, goto market or you'll need to communicate in your workplace. Not everyone will be understanding the language you speak so to overcome the issues it is best to have good knowledge and fluency of the language of country you are moving to.
But this cannot be the only reason you have to learn a new language some people learn new language for the other purpose also. For example a Muslim may be willing to learn arabic so he can understand the holy book or the teachings of Islam in a better way. Some people tend to be attached to a language so they learn it for themselves. Like I have a friend who is ENT specialist he is working in Dubai where people from different nationalties work or live together. This guy knows 5 languages and he did learned the the languages like Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Malyalam and English which are most spoken languages in the country so he can avoid any communication barrer caused by differece of language when he is providing consultation to his patiens.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall progression, dividing the two opposing views into two main blocks of text. However, paragraphing is extremely weak, with the entire response essentially structured into just two very dense blocks without proper introduction or conclusion paragraphs. Furthermore, cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or faulty. The transition between sentences often relies on weak conjunctions or run-on structures without proper punctuation, as seen in sentences like 'it is necessary to learn the language where you are moving in order to survive for example if you move to a new country...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of proper cohesive control significantly impacts readability, placing this firmly at a Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a sufficient vocabulary range to communicate basic ideas about language learning, work, and travel. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary or topic-specific terms, such as 'consultation', 'nationalties', and 'communication barrer'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'meduim', 'regoin', 'weather' (instead of whether), 'goto', 'Malyalam', and 'patiens'. These errors do not completely impede communication because the context remains clear, but they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the control over grammar and punctuation is poor. There are frequent run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'Not everyone will be understanding the language you speak so to overcome the issues it is best to have good knowledge...'. Punctuation is largely neglected, missing periods at sentence boundaries and apostrophes in contractions. Grammatical errors, such as tense inconsistencies ('he did learned the the languages') and missing prepositions, are noticeable throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for a Band 5.
