Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, it is believed that people learn a foriegn language just for the purpose of travel or getting an employment in a foreign country. While others argue that these are not only reasons to learn a language, there can be other goals as well. Although some people prefer to learn a foreign language for their interest, I believe mostly they learn to get an employment in international corporations or for tourism.

On the one hand, people learn different international languages because they want to travel in other countries and get a job in the well known companies. This is because they have to communicate with their colleages in offices so employees can easily understand their work and do not feel ashmed in front of others. Additionally, when tourist travel to different tourist destinations then they do shopping from markets therefore it is beneficial for them to have command on other international language. For example, the vast majority of workers or students move to other countries for higher education and occupation evey year so they learn languages first.

On the other hand, some individuals think that there can be other reasons as well that's why they like to learn a foreign language. This is to say that youngsters take more interest in getting knowledge about local and native languages of international nations. In fact, it is their hobby to understand various vocabulary words and grammer rules of local languages. For instance, people join different institutions to learn foregin languages such as Arabic, English and Urdu to increase their knowledge.

In conclusion, although few individuals acquire knowledge about international languages for interest, I believe that mainly they learn to start a job or for travelling purpose because it is advantageous for them to develop a better communication skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that learning a foreign language is solely for travel and work, and that there are other reasons—while also presenting a clear position. The student's position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas lack deep extension. For example, the argument regarding tourism and shopping could have been expanded to show how language skills improve cultural integration or business negotiation rather than just shopping. The main body paragraphs cover the key points logically, but the development remains slightly repetitive, echoing the employment and travel themes. Overall, the requirements of the prompt are adequately met with a clearly stated opinion in the introduction and conclusion, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the phrase 'While others argue that these are not only reasons... there can be other goals as well', which lacks smooth integration. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but logical progression within paragraphs occasionally stumbles due to abrupt shifts in examples, such as jumping from office communication to tourists shopping. These limitations place the text firmly within Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'international corporations', 'destinations', and 'institutions'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'foriegn' (foreign), 'employment' used as a countable noun ('an employment'), 'colleages' (colleagues), 'ashmed' (ashamed), 'evey' (every), and 'grammer' (grammar). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they recur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band score. The vocabulary is generally functional and minimally adequate for discussing travel, employment, and personal interests.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as concessive clauses ('Although some people prefer to learn...') and relative clauses. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'In recent years, it is believed that people learn...', 'that's why they like to learn', and 'to develop a better communication skills' (uncountable noun mismatch). Punctuation and article usage also show frequent minor inaccuracies. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor where a mix of structures exists alongside noticeable mechanical and grammatical flaws.
