It is undeniable that learning a foreign language is trend among youngsters. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. It attempts to discuss both views regarding foreign language learning and states a personal opinion, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed throughout the essay. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing 246 words instead of the required 250 words. While the writer mentions travel, work, and general knowledge, the arguments lack extension and are supported by superficial examples, such as watching a movie or helping a tourist from Paris. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to fully develop all parts of the task with extended explanations, richer arguments, and ensure the word count requirement is safely met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division and formatting are somewhat unconventional, such as beginning sentences without proper capitalization and running ideas together. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'To justify it,' and 'To elaborate it,'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical flow between sentences stumbles due to abrupt transitions. To improve, the writer should ensure smooth transitions between ideas, employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices, and maintain consistent paragraph structures with clear topical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. The student uses standard phrases like 'foreign language,' 'travel to or work in a foreign country,' and 'knowledge,' but noticeable errors occur in word choice and word formation, such as writing 'trend among youngsters,' 'favour of latter point,' and 'you can taught someone.' Spelling and morphological mistakes, such as 'othres' and 'learing,' occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate less common vocabulary with greater precision regarding collocation and style, and monitor spelling and word forms closely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are evident across the text, including punctuation omissions, capitalization errors at the start of sentences and after periods (e.g., 'to commence with, learning', 'in conclusion,'), and issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'when foreigners came,' 'you have learn,' and 'make you different from othres.' These recurring errors cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free complex sentence structures and exercise better control over basic grammatical rules and punctuation.
