IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
While some people think that moving abroad for either earning an income or travel globally is the only reason to learn a foreign language, others are of the view that these two should not be the only reasons. This essay agrees that becoming multilingual should not be limited to trips and work only as one may open the door to job opportunities even while staying in their home country.
Some people are of the opinion that learning a second language should only be limited to going to work or travel to another country. This is because they think it is a wastage of time and money if they put efforts in mastering another language. For example, learning English in Pakistan can cost up to 1 lac rupees and at least 3 months of preparation as well. This is why an individual from middle class will only consider learning it if he is moving abroad. I disagree with this view as there are multiple benefits for crafting the art of a second language.
Although it can be a tiresome and costly process, but becoming skillful in another language is always beneficial. Nowadays, world has become a global village where your skills are not limited to only your home country. For instance, many multinational companies offer remote jobs to highly skilled people and most of these businesses require proficient English levels. Thus, becoming familiar with English will benefit even if you do not plan to go to another country.
In conclusion, although it can be expensive to master another language without intending to travel around, it is clear that the advantages such as endless earning opportunities are more worthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views regarding the reasons for learning a foreign language and presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction and conclusion successfully outline the arguments. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the example about learning English costing "1 lac rupees" in Pakistan is introduced to support the first view, but the argument is not deeply expanded beyond financial cost. The counter-argument regarding remote jobs in multinational companies is relevant, but its development stops short of exploring broader cognitive or cultural benefits. This uneven development keeps the task response firmly within the band, as all aspects are touched upon with a clear stance, but fuller elaboration on each point is still missing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in introducing, discussing, and concluding the topic. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "This is because", "Although", and "For instance", successfully indicating shifts in argument. However, cohesion is occasionally somewhat mechanical. For example, the referencing in phrases like "This is why an individual from middle class will only consider learning it" relies on basic connective structures rather than smoother, more sophisticated cohesive ties. Furthermore, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be tighter to elevate the flow, meeting the lower band fully while showing partial elements of higher-level cohesive control.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's arguments about language learning. There are successful attempts to use less common items and phrasing, such as "multilingual", "tiresome and costly process", and "multinational companies". However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as "crafting the art of a second language" instead of 'mastering' or 'learning', and "proficient English levels" rather than 'proficient levels of English'. Additionally, there is a minor informal expression ("1 lac rupees") which slightly affects the academic register. These word choice and spelling errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the argument, which aligns precisely with this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, utilizing structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ("While some people think that...", "Although it can be a tiresome..."). There are several error-free sentences, showing a reasonable command of basic sentence patterns. However, some errors in grammar and punctuation persist, such as the double marking of concession in "Although it can be a tiresome and costly process, but becoming skillful...", where the conjunction "but" is redundant. There are also minor article omissions or misuse, such as "Nowadays, world has become a global village". These errors do not impede communication, and the sentence structures remain clear and understandable throughout, fully capturing the characteristics of this band level.
