Student answer (Band 5.0)

Language play a key role in the lives of human being. In this regard, it is believed by some people that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country, whereas these are not only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. I agree with latter viewpoint in this notion which will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs with logical conclusion.

On the one side, there are some reasons due to which people learn foreign language in order to travel or work in foreign country. The first and foremost reason is that people can earn more money at abroad or they like travelling. To explain it more , it enhances the knowledge of people and improves its communication skills. Moreover, they can settle their life at foreign country by earning good money at work.

On the other hand, education is also reason for learning a foreign language. To clarify it more, it is easier for students to study at abroad and they want to know about culture of other people. For example, students who are doing IELTS, they are learning a foreign language to go abroad for higher education. Moreover, it goal of students to go foreign country for further education to become Doctors and Engineers etc.

In conclusion, although there are some benefits of formal viewpoint such as enhance the knowledge of students and improve communication skills. Yet, education cannot be overlooked at any cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. It attempts to discuss both views regarding the reasons for learning a foreign language and provides a personal opinion, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on traveling and working abroad simply states that people can 'earn more money at abroad' without robust supporting arguments or clear elaboration. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met as the student's response contains 248 words, falling just short of the 250-word minimum. To reach a higher band, the response needs to extend and support all ideas more fully and ensure the minimum word count is satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some organization, attempting a four-paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or over-used, such as repetitive transitions like 'To clarify it more' and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is utilized, but the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs is occasionally disrupted, making the overall progression mechanical rather than natural. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more flexibly and ensure that the relationship between ideas is distinctly signposted.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts less common vocabulary with some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'earn more money at abroad', 'settle their life at foreign country', and 'formal viewpoint'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but phrasing is repetitive, which strains the reader at times. To move to a higher band, the student must demonstrate a wider, more precise range of vocabulary and collocation control, avoiding awkward prepositional pairings like 'at abroad'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting complex sentence forms. There are noticeable grammatical issues throughout, including subject-verb agreement errors like 'Language play a key role', article omissions and misuse such as 'it goal of students', and pronoun reference errors like 'improves its communication skills' instead of 'their'. These frequent errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to produce a greater variety of error-free complex structures with better control over grammar and articles.
