Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's world, some people believe that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country, while others argue that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. In my opinion, there are so many reasons for learning a new language and one of them could be travel or work in a foreign country.
On the one hand, people think that the only reason for learning a foreign language is travel because of a language barrier they face while visiting a different country. If an Indian citizen visits Germany, they may face difficulties while ordering food in a restaurant and communicating with local people. Additionally, foreign clients of the company can be another reason of this belief. This is because some companies have foreign clients, which encourages employees to learn a new language as clients often prefer to communicate in their regional language.
On the other hand, critics argue that a hobby can be one of the reasons for learning a new language. Many people have a hobby of exploring and learning a foreign language, which helps them to know about the culture of that nation. Furthermore, students willing to do higher studies in a foreign country can be another reason for this view. For instance, if an Indian student willing to pursue a master's degree in Germany, they may learn the German language to communicate with the local people.
In conclusion, people think the only reason of learning a foreign language is travel or work in foreign country because of a language barrier and foreign clients of a company. However, there are many other reasons such as higher studies in other country and a hobby of learning a new language. I believe that there are many other reasons for learning a new language and one of them can be travel or work in a foreign country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views and providing an opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven, placing the response at this level. While the first body paragraph provides a reasonable example of travel barriers, the second body paragraph presents studying abroad as a distinct viewpoint when it is more naturally an extension of working or living abroad. Furthermore, the writer's position, while stated in the introduction and conclusion, remains somewhat repetitive rather than progressively explored throughout the essay. To reach a higher level, the ideas need more thorough extension and support, and the opposing arguments must be more clearly distinguished and deeply analysed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, recognisable structure featuring an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different perspectives. However, the flow of ideas is occasionally mechanical, relying heavily on formulas like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand.' Referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes repetitive, and the progression between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the discussion about students in the second body paragraph feels slightly abrupt in relation to the preceding sentence about hobbies. To achieve a higher level, the essay would benefit from a more flexible and varied use of cohesive devices and seamless transitions between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas using terms such as 'language barrier,' 'communicating,' and 'exploring.' There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'encourages employees' and 'pursue a master's degree.' However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'reason of this belief' instead of 'reason for this belief,' and repeating the phrase 'reason of learning a foreign language' multiple times. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited precision. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items with stronger awareness of collocation and word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures in 'If an Indian citizen visits Germany, they may face difficulties.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('do higher studies in a foreign country' or 'in other country') and minor subject-verb agreement slips, but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The sentence structures show a reasonable attempt at complexity, though control over articles and prepositions is inconsistent. To move to the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of sophisticated complex structures with consistent accuracy.
