Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays, some people believe that learning a foreign language is only needed to travel or work abroad while others think that this is not the only reason for learning a new language. I strongly agree with the second opinion and in this essay, I will support my opinion with examples and also draw a conclusion.
Firstly, learning a foreign language gives you the opportunity to explore the cultural values of a nation, to understand their customs and traditions. For instance, if a person loves travelling and is intrested to explore the world, he/she should invest his/her time to learn some other languages so that it will help him/her in future. While travelling, they can communicate with other people and gather a lot of information about their culture.
Secondly, the people who are able to communiacte in more languages are more intelligent because they have opportunity to aquire more knowledge. They can understand the emotions better than others. They are more intellectual as they have trained their brains. Their brains are now tuned to learn other languages and they can now learn more languages with less effort than the other ordinary people.
However, learning a foreign language is needed to work and travel abroad. In this case, it could not be a choice for someone. He/she may have to learn the other language at any cost to survive there. Otherwise, it could cause lot of problems for that person. Therefore, it is necessary for them to learn their language of workplace.
All things considered, I believe that learning a new language offers you more oppourtunities and enhance the intellect. Although, it is needed to be learned at any cost to travel or work abroad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on foreign language learning and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, the argument that multilingual individuals are more intelligent is introduced in the third paragraph but lacks deep explanation or concrete evidence, relying instead on broad assertions about brain training. Similarly, the concession regarding work and travel in the fourth paragraph is brief and touches on necessity without fully exploring the nuances. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be extended with more specific examples and thorough reasoning rather than superficial generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, starting each body paragraph with a clear signpost such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'However.' Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and cohesive devices are used rather repetitively. For instance, referencing can be unclear, such as shifting pronouns between singular and plural forms when discussing travelers. To improve cohesion, you should employ a wider and more natural variety of transitional phrases and ensure that referencing links smoothly between sentences without relying on formulaic listing words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and topic-related terminology like 'cultural values,' 'multilingual,' and 'oppourtunities.' However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'intrested,' 'communiacte,' 'aquire,' and 'oppourtunities,' alongside occasional word choice inaccuracies like 'language of workplace' instead of 'language of the workplace.' These lexical shortcomings indicate an emerging control of vocabulary where less common words are attempted with some lack of precision. To achieve a higher standard, focus on eliminating spelling mistakes and using precise collocations and higher-level academic phrasing naturally throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional clauses ('if a person loves travelling...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'cause lot of problems' instead of 'cause a lot of problems' and 'the people who are able to communiacte in more languages' instead of 'more languages.' Attempts at complex sentence structures often result in clumsy phrasing. To progress further, you need to exercise better control over grammatical patterns, ensure accurate use of articles and prepositions, and minimize errors in complex sentences so that they do not distract the reader.
