Student answer (Band 5.5)

People often believe that foreign language is only useful in purpose of traveling or working at abroad. But there are also people who thinks a new language serves more then that. Here, I will discuss the both view points and gives my opinion.

Each country have their own language through which they communicate with each others and feels comfortable to use that tongue in their daily life. So, at least a basic level of understanding is needed in their language, if anyone wants to travel a new country. It helps people to get adjust in the new environment and the society of overseas. But the urge of learning a foreign language should not be the only for visiting purpose. In the age of globalization, everyone is connected with each other through internet, books or any kind of commercial way. In that case, language is the most suitable medium to link with various people. At least learning a language, which is commonly known by most of the countries people is became a basic need. It improvise the communication and develop understanding with the abroad people and help to realize their culture or increase the business opportunities.

For example, If a person or company want to establish a business with foreign company, they need to communicate in a common language. In that case, one of those companies or peoples must need to learn a different language. Similar things can happen if anyone want to read a foreign book or want to study abroad. For researcher learning different language is almost compulsory, because of their urge to read the journal of the scientist from others country. Also achieving knowledge in different language has its own value in modern job world.

Finally, I think requirement of learning a foreign language should not be limited only for visiting and working purpose in abroad. To cope up with new world it almost became necessary to learn more new tongue as much as possible for better communication with global people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on learning a foreign language and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the necessity of a basic language understanding for travel, and the broader benefits of global connectivity, business, and research. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the points about globalization and research are introduced but remain somewhat generalised and under-developed, lacking specific, well-rounded elaboration. Despite this uneven development, the main position is discernible throughout the essay, fulfilling the core requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow from discussing travel to exploring broader global and professional benefits. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing different aspects, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases like 'In that case' are overused, and referencing is not always clear, such as in the sentence 'one of those companies or peoples must need to learn a different language,' where the logical progression between sentences feels slightly disjointed. Cohesive devices are attempted but lack smooth integration throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'globalization,' 'commercial way,' and 'researcher.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'working at abroad' instead of 'working abroad,' 'get adjust' instead of 'get adjusted,' 'improvise' instead of 'improve,' and 'others country' instead of 'other countries.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message, these persistent inaccuracies in word choice and form prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to construct varied sentences such as conditional structures ('If a person or company want to...'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('Each country have,' 'everyone is connected,' 'company want') and article usage ('in a new country,' 'for visiting purpose'). While these errors do not completely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough across different sentence structures to restrict the grammatical score, showing limited control over complex patterns.
