Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most individuals imply that the core reason for practising an international language is to travel or be part of their workforce. Some say only these two propositions are not good enough for someone to learn a different language.

In this essay, we wil talk about if the above mentioned reasons are good enough to learn a global language or we could have other reasons to learn it anyway. I agree with the first statement because on an average, travelling and working in a different country is the most important and common reason for people to learn a language. But these two should not be the only thing that matters for an individual who wants to learn a global language.

Learning a language for the purpose of travelling and working abroad are two of the most common and perfect reasons. Knowing about a culture and its language is a great way to connect to people. It creates a sense of belonging between the people and they are more comfortable talking to someone who speaks their language rather than the one who dont. it also enhances the travelling experience. For example, if i see a travelling vlog on social media and the traveller who is visiting a country speaks their language or even some slangs, people appreciate him and show him the hospitality and try to engage which in turn makes the video fun and engaging. In todays fast paced world, speaking a native language in an international workplace is a necessity. The only way to connect and being productive is if you know the language of the country. It can also help professionally.

In todays world, people have friends all over the globe because of social media. So they learn a language in order to connect to their friends abroad or simply trying to impress them. And because of global connectivity remote jobs are incresing rapidly. now even if you dont go to a foreign country, you must learn a language and people do it to grow professionly.

In conclusion, travelling and working abroad can be the core reasons for someone trying to larn a language but they should not be the only purpos

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on foreign language learning and attempting to provide an opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks consistent extension. For example, while the writer mentions travelling and working abroad, the explanation relies heavily on generalized examples rather than fully exploring the nuances of each view. The position is stated, particularly in the introduction and conclusion, but it fluctuates slightly in clarity as the essay progresses. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a fully developed position with well-supported ideas that thoroughly examine all parts of the task without abrupt transitions or under-developed arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic logical structure and the essay is divided into paragraphs, but overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and somewhat mechanical transitions. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes inadequate or applied repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on simple connectors and repetitive referencing. For instance, sentences within the body paragraphs often start in a disjointed manner, lacking smooth logical flow to connect preceding thoughts. Paragraphing is present, yet the internal grouping of ideas lacks tight thematic unity. To improve in this area, the writer should ensure that each paragraph builds clear progression towards the central thesis and use a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. The writer attempts some less common terms and phrases, such as 'fast paced world' and 'global connectivity', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'larn' instead of 'learn', 'incresing' instead of 'increasing', and 'professionly' instead of 'professionally'. Additionally, there are informal lexical choices like 'slangs' (which should be 'slang'). These errors and limitations cause occasional difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary range from being deemed sufficient for precision and flexibility. Expanding the repertoire of precise academic vocabulary and focusing on accurate word formation and spelling are essential steps for advancement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable and frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalization (e.g., 'i', 'todays'), subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'someone who dont' instead of 'someone who doesn't'), and incorrect verb tenses or patterns (e.g., 'we wil talk about if...', 'connecting and being productive'). These frequent errors draw the reader's attention and can cause some difficulty in comprehension. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
