Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on foreign language learning and providing an opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven across the essay. While the writer presents relevant points regarding work and travel experiences, such as career prospects and communication needs during voyages, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated. For instance, the discussion on cognitive and personal development lacks sufficient extension and concrete illustration. Furthermore, the position is generally clear throughout the text, though the overall integration of the arguments could be tighter to ensure a fully cohesive exploration of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the different viewpoints and the writer's personal opinion. However, cohesion at times feels somewhat mechanical or faulty. Devices such as 'To elaborate' and 'Consequently' are employed, but referencing and transitions between sentences can occasionally be unclear or repetitive, such as the repeated reliance on similar transitional phrases. Overall, the structural framework is established, but the flow between cohesive ties requires smoother integration.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'career prospects', 'communication skills', and 'personal development'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'learn foreign languages lead to' instead of 'learning foreign languages leads to', 'do conversation' instead of 'have a conversation', 'isolote' instead of 'isolated', and spelling issues such as 'langugues'. These inaccuracies reflect a limited resource where vocabulary control is inconsistent, placing the response firmly within the lower descriptive bounds.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors like 'foreign languages is not only improving', incorrect verb forms such as 'i will going to explain', missing articles ('an international voyage'), and faulty prepositional phrases or relative clauses. Although these errors rarely completely obscure the core meaning, their frequency and the faulty execution of complex structures cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher rating.
