IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, some people believe in learning foreign language just to get flexibility during travel and employment in non-native countries. While on the other hand, people disagree with the above statement by shifting human mindsets to the broader horizon of perspective. This essay will discuss both viewpoints with my own opinion.

In schools and universities, students are taught to inculcate their interest in learning different languages. These practice not only benefit students in smooth transition of employment in international countries but also make them ready to travel across the globe with an inbuilt confidence. For example, after graduation, students who know more than one language are more likely to get opportunities from different countries compared to students who only knows their native language. Additionally, if a majority of interviewers in the interview speaks english as their first language, they are more prone to select employees who can communicate and understand seamlessly in English. Notably, a person's intellectual and cognitive levels are indirectly measured by the fluency in various languages.

Though, these reasons are not limited to above discussed perspective. One can also benefit in different ways if he or she knows more than one language. If healthcare professionals know foreign languages, they can easily connect with their patients by breaking the language barrier. Furthermore, learning foreign languages can open the horizon to understand people well across the globe and get opportunities to connect with their culture and tradition.

In my opinion, people should learn foreign languages not only to excel in their career but also to connect broadly, deeply and internally with their culture and tradtion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on learning foreign languages and presenting a clear personal opinion. The main ideas are generally relevant, satisfying the requirements for a solid mid-range score. For instance, the discussion on employment opportunities and healthcare benefits provides clear support for the arguments. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; the point about cognitive levels in the second paragraph is left relatively brief and lacks sufficient extension. To reach a higher band, all main ideas would need to be thoroughly explored and supported with deeper explanations or more robust examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct viewpoints, such as employment benefits versus cultural connection. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable success, including transitions like 'Additionally' and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or faulty, such as the awkward transitional phrase 'Though, these reasons' at the beginning of the third paragraph. To achieve a higher level of coherence, referencing could be smoother and the logical links between sentences made more natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's message. The student attempts some less common lexical items, such as 'inculcate', 'cognitive levels', and 'breaking the language barrier'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, writing 'learning foreign language' instead of 'learning a foreign language' or 'foreign languages', and using 'These practice' instead of 'This practice'. Additionally, terms like 'shift human mindsets to the broader horizon' show awkward phrasing. While these spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, they reflect a typical mid-level performance that prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several good error-free sentences, particularly in the discussion of healthcare professionals and career opportunities. However, a number of grammatical errors persist throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'students who only knows their native language', missing articles, and inappropriate preposition usage in phrases like 'deeply and internally with their culture and tradtion'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as the comma splice in the final sentence. These errors rarely impede communication, but their frequency places the response firmly within a developing grammar band.
