Learning a language is an art which helps to communicate better, express your feelings, and share thoughts with others. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the prompt asks to discuss both views and give a personal opinion, the student's position is not always clearly stated or sustained throughout the response. Ideas tend to be limited and under-developed, relying on repetition rather than deep elaboration. For instance, the mention of communication, making new friends, and understanding culture in the introduction is revisited in the body paragraphs without significant extension or clear examples. The conclusion attempts to summarize the views, but the arguments remain somewhat superficial and lack the fully developed reasoning expected at higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization present, with an attempt at paragraphing, but the essay lacks clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on words like 'Firstly', 'Conversely', and 'However' without always connecting the logical flow smoothly. Referencing and paragraph transitions can be mechanical, leading to a disjointed feel between sentences. For example, the transition from discussing travel and work requirements to general communication feels abrupt, and the internal structure of the body paragraphs often circles back on itself without moving the argument forward.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'achieveing', 'foreigh', 'foriegn', 'prespective', and 'constrainst'. While these errors do not completely obscure communication, they frequently cause the reader some difficulty and reflect a lack of precision in word form and spelling. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'exposure' and 'perspective', but inaccurate collocations and persistent spelling lapses restrict the score to this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures. When the writer attempts complex sentences, they are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar, agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'If learning only limited to travel or work is also valuable if you are meeting the requirements and achieveing your goals' and 'both views has it own values'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, which cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of firm control over complex grammatical patterns.
