Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on why people learn foreign languages and presenting a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on how languages help in surviving lonely times or building strong relationships lacks specific elaboration and depth. While the writer's position is discernible in the introduction, it is not consistently maintained or clearly supported throughout the body paragraphs. Some ideas are repetitive, such as the general mentions of enhancing understanding and improving knowledge, which prevents the response from moving beyond a partial treatment of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the essay into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the differing views. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and faulty. Transitional phrases like 'One the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are employed, but referencing and logical progression within the paragraphs are disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'Owing to, different languages provide chance'. As a result, the progression of ideas is not always smooth or clearly signalled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'employment' and 'vocabulary and idioms', but there are noticeable word choice, collocation, and word formation errors throughout the text, including 'high paid income', 'foreign human beings', and 'improve their knowledge' where 'improving' is needed. Additionally, spelling and word form slips like 'theri' and 'word's' occur. These lexical inaccuracies and limitations create some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher level of precision and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on basic forms alongside attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of these frequent errors include 'foreign language is only learning', 'these is not only purpose', 'if they know well speak language companies give to chance them', and 'when they will go abroad'. These frequent grammatical inaccuracies cause strain and difficulty for the reader in places, though the general meaning can still be deciphered.
