Student answer (Band 5.0)
Main purpose of learning a foreign language vary from person to person. Some people learn a foregin language to grab oppourtunities present in foreign countries. For example, those students who wish to take admission in foreign educational institutes have to qualify English test with scores depending upon the criteria of that specific university. Another purpose which motivates people to learn a foreign language is to secure a decent job with high salaries in other countries. Mostly foreign companies prefer those candidates which can communicate in their native language. These are the reasons which increase the dedication in people to learn a new language.
Some folks donot have these reasons rather they learn a new language as a part of their hobbies. To make themselves comfortable, some people love to learn new things thus making it one of their hobby.
The reason for me to learn a foreign language would be to secure a seat in my dream university. For this purpose, I am still learning English to get a scholarship in any Australian university.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, discussing reasons for learning a foreign language such as travel, work, and personal hobbies, and briefly gives a personal opinion. However, the ideas remain quite limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient extension and support. Furthermore, an important limitation of this submission is that the length requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the minimum two hundred and fifty words required for this task. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop all parts of the task with more detailed explanations, relevant examples, and a fully realised conclusion that properly expands on the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with attempts to separate ideas into paragraphs, such as discussing career and educational reasons in the first body section and hobbies in the second. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical connection between paragraphs is basic. Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which restricts the smooth flow of information. For instance, transitioning between the diverse views and the personal opinion feels abrupt. To improve, the writer should use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to clearly link sentences and paragraphs, ensuring a seamless logical progression throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the basic points about learning languages for work or study. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as spelling 'foreign' as 'foregin' and 'opportunities' as 'oppourtunities', alongside awkward phrasing like 'grab oppourtunities' and 'Some folks donot have these reasons'. These lexical errors occasionally distract the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and precise academic collocations while demonstrating greater accuracy in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional attempts at complex forms that are sometimes basic. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles and tense inconsistencies, such as 'Main purpose... vary' which demonstrates subject-verb agreement issues. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher proportion of error-free sentences, alongside improved control over punctuation and subject-verb agreement.
