Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, and importantly, it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at 221 words. The position is stated rather simply, with the writer expressing agreement that learning a foreign language helps with travel and work, and also acknowledging alternative reasons. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of how languages help to 'learn thier norms values cultures' is superficial and lacks extension or concrete elaboration. While there is an attempt to discuss both views, the development is basic and lacks the depth expected for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation in the essay, attempting to separate ideas into distinct paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. The flow of ideas is frequently disrupted by a lack of appropriate cohesive devices. Words and phrases like 'type thing' and abrupt transitions between sentences create a disjointed reading experience. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks logical links, making it difficult for the reader to follow a cohesive line of argument throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'norm', 'values', and 'barrier', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word form, choice, and spelling, such as 'thier' instead of 'their' and 'usefull' instead of 'useful'. Repetition of simple phrases like 'this skill is always usefull' restricts the lexical range. These inaccuracies sometimes cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a basic control of word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or run-on sentences joined by commas rather than proper subordination or punctuation. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('learn language', 'add this skill to CV'), subject-verb agreement issues, and incorrect punctuation. For example, sentences like 'Some people say only reason to learn foreign language help to travel or work in foreign country I agreed with this' show a lack of control over basic clause structure and punctuation, resulting in frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader.
