Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, learning foreign language has been on trend. It is to either travel in a foreign country or to work. In countries like Nepal, most student and workers plan to go abroad to work and study. In such cases, learning foreign language are necessary. To be in a forign society and to fit in it, knowing about foreign culture is very important.

For students who study abroad, to adjust in the new environment, they must learn to communicate and that can be done through their language. Even if some people are looking for a job in foreign country, the employer asks for their understanding in native language. Mostly native language speakers visit the shops where part time jobs are given, so the student and workers should pass the requirement.

But, these are not the only reason why someone should learn a foreign language. Some people are also invested in learning a foreign language due to their own interest. I am a kdrama and kpop fan so I was very much keen on learning korean language. Many of my friends are learning japanese because the like anime. We seem to be known about the foreign culture that we like.

Recent researches has also shown that learning a foreign language makes an individual more productive. Learning another language makes a human brain more cabable of creative thinking and improves our time management skills.

A person who knows a language other than his own is said to be more confident and good at most things that he/she does.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on learning foreign languages and presenting a personal opinion, which places it above the lower bands. However, the treatment of the ideas is somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on travel and work largely focuses on students and workers in Nepal moving abroad, relying on general statements without deep elaboration. Similarly, the points regarding personal interest and cognitive benefits are introduced briefly, such as mentioning K-pop and productivity research, but these concepts lack extended support and clear examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each argument with more detailed explanations, concrete examples, and a clearer overall progression of ideas throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays some overall organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing different viewpoints, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression from paragraph to paragraph, and the logical flow is occasionally disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic. Cohesive devices are used in a basic or repetitive manner, such as starting multiple paragraphs with transitions like 'For students' or 'Recent researches has also shown', rather than creating a smooth, natural link between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping related points together is inconsistently managed. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence and that a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices is employed to connect sentences and paragraphs seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate basic ideas about travel, work, and personal interests. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'productive', 'creative thinking', and 'confident', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, including 'forign' instead of foreign, 'cabable' instead of capable, and 'researches' treated as a countable noun. Additionally, collocations like 'learning foreign language' miss necessary articles. These lexical inaccuracies and limited control over less common items mean the vocabulary remains at a modest level. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding lexical precision, checking spelling carefully, and mastering word forms and article usage with less common phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and article use, such as 'learning foreign language are necessary', 'to adjust in the new environment', and 'the employer asks for their understanding in native language'. Punctuation and pluralization are also inconsistently handled, as seen in 'Recent researches has'. These frequent errors can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control over grammatical patterns. To progress, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences, monitor agreement and articles closely, and reduce basic grammatical slips.
