Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views regarding the reasons for learning a foreign language and provides an opinion in the conclusion, fitting the requirements for this band level. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and uneven. While the essay touches on travel, employment, culture, and communication, the points are often repetitive or under-developed. For example, the discussion on employment remains quite brief ('secure a good job,and in that case a perso has more career opportunities'), lacking specific expansion or detailed examples. Furthermore, the position in the introduction is awkwardly phrased as 'This essay argued between...', which obscures the writer's stance. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully extended and supported with clearer reasoning and more precise examples throughout all body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization, with an introduction, distinct body paragraphs exploring different views, and a brief concluding sentence. However, there is a noticeable lack of clear overall progression, and the logical links between ideas are frequently awkward or mechanical. Cohesive devices are used in a basic or repetitive manner, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'The first group of people' and 'The second group of people' to structure the response. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is sometimes faulty; for instance, the transition from discussing emergencies while travelling to job security in the third paragraph is abrupt and lacks a smooth connecting thread. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which forces the reader to work harder to follow the progression of thought. Improving logical connectors and ensuring smoother paragraph transitions would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message of the essay. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items related to travel, culture, and education, such as 'career opportunities', 'global stage', and 'worldwide understandable language', but these are often marred by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, phrases like 'country language' instead of 'native language' or 'local language', and 'scenerio' demonstrate that lexical control is weak. Additionally, there are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'eaiser' and 'dfferent', alongside awkward expressions like 'how the people speak and their tones'. While communication is generally achieved despite these limitations, the frequent inaccuracies and lack of precision restrict the range and effectiveness of the vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and overly long, run-on complex sentences that lack proper punctuation. Attempts at complex sentence forms are frequently faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'This essay argued between' instead of 'This argument concerns', and 'you to travel abroad' instead of 'you want to travel abroad'. Furthermore, errors in subject-verb agreement, such as 'a person... have no idea' and 'an individual... helps tham', are common throughout the text. Prepositions and articles are also handled inconsistently. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause difficulty for the reader and disrupt the clarity of the arguments presented.
