Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt only partially. While the student attempts to discuss both views regarding why people learn foreign languages and provides a personal opinion, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For example, the statement in the introduction that 'this trend will discuss why some people are curious to learn a foreign language' lacks clarity and does not accurately frame the essay topic. Throughout the body paragraphs, points regarding travel, work, and cultural understanding are mentioned, such as 'those who want to build a national level company or to join multinational company', but they are not fully explained or extended with solid reasoning or specific examples. The position is stated but lacks consistent clarity as arguments tend to overlap and repeat. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to ensure all parts of the task are fully addressed with well-developed, distinct ideas and a clear, sustained position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some organisation through the use of paragraphing and basic transitional markers like 'On the one hand', 'On the orther hand', and 'In conclusion', but there is no clear overall progression. The logical flow is frequently disrupted by confusing sentences and abrupt shifts in focus, such as transitioning from corporate aspirations directly to communication issues without sufficient linking. Furthermore, cohesive devices are often inadequate or inaccurate, as seen with 'Futhermore' and repetitive phrasing like 'foreign language' used excessively as a mechanical link between sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact line of argument. To achieve a higher score, the writer must improve the logical progression between sentences and paragraphs, and use a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices without over-relying on repetitive connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Throughout the text, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, such as 'essay' instead of 'easy', 'orther' instead of 'other', 'thinnk', 'resident' instead of 'reside', and 'knowlege' or 'gowth'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'multinational company' and 'language barrier', but these attempts are undermined by persistent errors in collocation and morphological form, such as 'known about' instead of 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable about'. To progress to the next level, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and use terms with greater precision and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex sentences that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the essay. Examples include 'this are not only reason', 'some people say that learning a foreign language is in order to travel', and 'if community are not aware'. These frequent errors create frequent obstacles for the reader and occasionally obscure the intended meaning. To reach a higher standard, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with improved accuracy, paying careful attention to basic grammatical rules such as pluralisation, verb agreement, and prepositional usage.
