Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain individual hold belief that the major reason for learning a overseas language is in order to travel to or get employment in a different speaking nations, while others argue that there must be other reasons which supports why people should know a foreign language. This essay will discuss the both perspective before giving my opinion in forthcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, the foremost reason to justify why we should learn overseas language to gain work opportunity and to helpful during travel is to neglect lack of communication and better understanding. If people knows the language of their destination country then it will reduce the problems that might occur due to not understanding their language. For instance, less communication problem with their citizens, understand the written banners on the street and public transport bus names and routes, serves independent travelling without need of translator. Therefore, they will feel confident to travel in a new country if they knows their local language fluently. Furthermore, knowing extra language will bring plenty of options in their work life. it is often said that knowing more language will increase the chances to get chosen by employers.

The other people who believe there are other reasons to learn a new language. Firstly, To get help in study. There are certain foreign courses which is available in their local language only so in order to learn that course we should know these language. For example, In Quebec most of courses runned in french language only, for russia we should know russian language likewise. Moreover, many university require certain language knowledge to secure admission, therefore people should know these language and have to mastered in it, while other may have a hobby to know every language or curious to know certain languages.

To conclude, In my opinion I think there are numerous reasons to learn foreign language other than just for work and travel such as, to gain admission in the certain institute, for own desire, curiosity and to fulfill basic course requirement, thus work and travel is not the only reason why people acquire new languages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on learning a foreign language and presenting a clear position. The main ideas are relevant, fulfilling the requirements for the given band. For instance, the discussion on travel and employment covers practical benefits, while the second body paragraph introduces study requirements and personal interest. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated, such as the mention of hobbies and curiosity, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. The position is maintained throughout the essay, and the main arguments are sufficiently supported with examples, such as the mention of Quebec and Russian language courses.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the distinct viewpoints into designated paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to link the sections together, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing can occasionally be unclear, as seen with phrases like 'The other people who believe there are other reasons' where a main verb is missing. This demonstrates the characteristics of the awarded band, successfully organising information while displaying some faults in cohesive transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'employment', 'independent travelling', and 'translator'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that reflect the constraints of the band. Examples include 'overseas language' instead of 'foreign language', 'different speaking nations', 'runned', and 'mastered in it'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur throughout the text, but they generally do not impede overall communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word selection and a wider control of less common lexical features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied grammatical structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Certain individual hold belief' and 'courses which is available', article omissions ('in french language only'), and incorrect verb forms ('If people knows'). These errors reflect a limited range of reliable structures, and attempts at complex sentences are often faulty. Despite these frequent errors, the meaning can still be followed by the reader. Greater control over grammatical mechanics and complex sentence formation is required to progress further.
