Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on foreign language learning and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and uneven, which places the writing at this level. While the introduction mentions multiple reasons, some supporting points lack depth or clarity. For instance, the discussion regarding tourism in India and translation services is somewhat generalised and under-developed. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to present fully extended and well-supported ideas throughout the body paragraphs, ensuring that every argument is thoroughly explained with relevant examples rather than briefly stated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a clear attempt to organise the essay into paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both views, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression lacks consistency, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or basic, such as the frequent reliance on 'Apart from this' and 'For example'. Additionally, referencing is not always clear, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive links and ensure that ideas within and between paragraphs follow a clear, progressive path.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss language learning, travel, and education. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as 'reason' instead of 'reasons', 'other language' instead of 'other languages', and 'pursuing their further education in abroad'. These inaccuracies sometimes cause slight confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items with greater precision in collocation and style, while minimising basic word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in 'While other may learn to pursue careers' and 'so many universities in all over the world used their native language.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and pluralisation throughout the essay, including 'woks' instead of 'works' and missing articles. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret the meaning. To progress, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns and improve grammatical accuracy across basic structures.
