Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

foriegn language means that any language that is not fluently spoken in our native area and if someone is moving to a region where the language is completely different from what we speak back in our country than the survival could get much difficuilt for someone who does not know thier language so if someone is saying that learning some foriegn language is just only necessary for someone who plans to go to some foreign region for some work, study or business, he could be right by his own point of view because it required alot of effort, passion and dedication to learn some new words, sounds and pronunciataion which could be copletely different form antything what he or she has heard so far so the point is why some should put this much effort on something thats not a must doing for him so its only usefull for someone who has to interact with foriegners, but there is always a counter party so we also got one here in this case too. They claims that this is not necesserily true that someone must have to physically move to some foreign land or he must have some routine meetups with people from other nations if he want to learn some language other than his mother tounge, there are solid reasons for this as there is alot of litrature, drama, art and movies that published in books or released on secreen world wide could never ever be always in our own language so if someone wants to amused himself with these artistics master pieces and if he wants to enjoy the real essence of that art he must be familiar with that foriegn language otherwise it would be waste of time for him. here we got points and aurguments of both patries but as far i concern, i beleive that its a delecasy to know some foriegn language but if someone is not into it then first argument is for him that its necessary for only foriegn interaction beacause he got nothing to do with it but if someone got taste in art and he realy enjoys to read or wants to know about the things that have been writen or spoken in some different langauge, this type of person get alot of reasons to learn some foriegn language.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both positions: the first paragraph explains why language learning may be necessary for people moving abroad, while the later section gives cultural reasons, including literature, drama, art, and films. Your own view is also present, especially in the conclusion, where you distinguish between people who need a language for interaction and those interested in art. However, the position is not consistently clear: the opening largely restates the first view, and the conclusion makes your opinion conditional rather than stating a firm overall judgement. Several ideas are asserted rather than developed—for example, the claim that art would be “a waste of time” without the original language needs qualification or an example. A clearer thesis and fuller support for each view would address the task more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an identifiable overall sequence: you introduce the practical argument, present cultural motivations, and then give your opinion. However, the response is written as one very long paragraph, so the stages of the discussion are difficult to follow. Many ideas are joined in extended chains with “so,” “because,” and “but,” which makes the progression feel repetitive rather than clearly controlled. Phrases such as “here we got points and arguments of both parties” signal a transition, but do not create a clear paragraph structure. Divide the essay into an introduction, separate body paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Use a smaller range of linking expressions and make sure each one shows the precise relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “dedication,” “literature,” “essence,” and “interact,” and you convey both practical and cultural reasons for learning languages. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “foreign language,” “someone,” and “some,” while frequent spelling errors—such as “foriegn,” “difficuilt,” and “pronunciataion”—reduce accuracy and can distract the reader. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “routine meetups” is not a natural way to describe regular contact, and “artistics master pieces” does not express the intended idea clearly. Build a more accurate topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations carefully. More precise wording would make your arguments easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt complex sentences using clauses and connectors, for example, “if someone is moving to a region where the language is completely different…” This shows an effort to express conditions and explain reasons. However, these structures are often faulty or run on for many clauses, making relationships between ideas hard to follow. There are frequent problems with agreement and verb forms, as in “They claims” and “if he want,” as well as sentence boundaries and punctuation. The opening sentence, for instance, continues through several separate ideas without a full stop. Use shorter, controlled sentences alongside complex ones, check subject–verb agreement, and punctuate each complete thought. This would improve clarity while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
