IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two opinions about learning a foreign language, one is its learned only while travelling or in order to work in that country. Second group believes there are more reasons associated with it. In my opinion, language is a skill and it is not bound to any conditions for learning. Overall language plays a significant role when we are travelling to a different country it helps in blending with culture and people there.
Firstly, we will discuss people who believe in learning a language when they are travelling or going there to earn their livelihood. The reason behind this opinion is, since, language is important to become a part of any society. So, they believe it should be learnt only if required.
On the other hand, a group is said to believe that learning a language is an acquired skill. If you have interest and resources it is a great talent to be learnt. In my country a lot of people started learning Chinese for fun and later when trade became frequent they started working as translators. However, it was not their main reason for learning it. Language is not only a mode of communication but also helps you learning cultural ethics and moral values of that country. Moreover, it decreases the distance and awkwardness among people from different regions.
In conclusion, knowing local language helps you when you are going there either for work or leisure but if you have interest your quest to learn something should not be limited to this reason only, Therefore, whenever someone gets a chance to learn a new language they should avail it, Regardless of of the fact you will go there or no.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and make your own position clear: learning a language can be worthwhile beyond travel or employment. The Chinese-learning example supports this well, showing how an interest-led choice later became useful for work. You also explain practical benefits such as fitting into a society and understanding its culture. However, the first view is mostly restated rather than explored, and the claim that language helps people learn “cultural ethics and moral values” would benefit from a specific explanation or example. Your conclusion reinforces your opinion, though it could more directly compare the two views. Developing the reasons for each side more evenly would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the Chinese example is placed appropriately in the paragraph about broader reasons for learning. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening moves from the two opinions to travel benefits without clearly linking that point to your position, while “So, they believe it should be learnt only if required” repeats the preceding idea. The final sentence also joins several points in a crowded way. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph’s central point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “livelihood,” “acquired skill,” “translators,” and “awkwardness,” which helps express both practical and cultural reasons for language learning. Some less common expressions are attempted, but several choices are unnatural or imprecise, such as “a great talent to be learnt,” “decreases the distance,” and “cultural ethics.” “Blending with culture” is also less idiomatic than a phrase such as integrating into the local culture. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your main ideas, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations and choose words that express the intended relationship directly, rather than relying on broad or unusual phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if you have interest and resources” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “one is its learned” needs a passive form (“it is learned”), and “helps you learning” should be “helps you learn.” The sentence beginning “The reason behind this opinion is, since” has an incomplete or awkward structure, and the final sentence contains punctuation and agreement problems, including “Regardless of of the fact” and “you will go there or no.” Review verb forms, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, especially when combining several clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
