Student answer (Band 5.5)

One of the biggest and practical challenges that people face when travelling and working in foreign country is that the language barrier. Some people think that people should learn foreign languages just for travelling and working in abroad, while others argue that there are many reasons to learn foreign language. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion why I believe that people should learn foreign language not only to travel or work but also for some personal benefits and respect the locals of that country.

On the one hand, One major reasons for learning foreign language is that people can use them when they will explore that country. In workplace, there could be several colleagues including locals and foreigners, so a person can easily communicate with local workers by using their languages. It can increase their work efficiency and performances and strenghtened their internal bondings. Knowing foreign languages can help travellers a lot, they can communicate with locals easily and ask for their helps and guidance. Even people can learn history and culture of that country more effectively. This can make their travel more interesting and memorable.

On the other hand, learning foreign languages can have some other reasons too. Some people have greater interest for learning different languages. They consider this thing more than just a hobby or passion. This helps a person to increase their knowledge for world, regardless of their geographical distances. For instance, nowadays, Kpop bands are popular among young people worldwide, so young individuals naturally feel interested for learning korean language to communicate with other fans from south Korea. In addition, there are several language institute are available to give support the students who want to study abroad. As a result, this trend is increasing employment and generating profits for both individuals and country's.

In my opinion, there are several reasons available to learn different languages. People nowadays are eagerly want to know about different countries including their history, culture, way of lives by reading local books or newspaper without visiting their countries.

In conclusion, people should not learn foreign language only to travel or work, they should learn other country's languages but also for reading books from any local authors, knowing any famous bands, getting knowledge for geographical locations and resources and so on.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear overall opinion: learning languages is useful for travel and work, but also for personal interests and cultural understanding. The workplace and travel examples support the first view, while the K-pop example gives a relevant reason beyond practical necessity. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. The reference to language institutes, employment and profits is not clearly connected to the argument, and the final paragraph introduces reading local books without developing how this supports your position. To strengthen the response, explain each main reason more fully and make the distinction between the two views clearer, while keeping your opinion consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, an opinion paragraph and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the overall direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the point about language institutes and employment appears abruptly after the K-pop example, and the opinion paragraph repeats ideas that could be integrated into the discussion. Some linking is mechanical, and references such as “this trend” are not fully clear. Organise each body paragraph around one central claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “language barrier,” “work efficiency,” “communicate with locals,” and “history and culture.” These choices make the subject clear, and attempts such as “geographical distances” show an effort to express more complex ideas. However, inaccurate collocations and word forms are noticeable, for example “ask for their helps,” “internal bondings,” and “knowledge for world.” Spelling errors such as “strenghtened” and “korean” also reduce accuracy. Some phrases are vague or unnatural, including “this thing” and “getting knowledge for geographical locations.” Aim for precise, natural combinations of words and check spelling, especially for less familiar vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while,” “so,” and “regardless of,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “One major reasons” has a number-agreement problem, “there are several language institute are available” combines incompatible structures, and “People nowadays are eagerly want” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also missing or incorrect articles in phrases such as “in foreign country.” These errors sometimes make sentences difficult to process. Practise building accurate basic clauses first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
