Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response touches on both views: it mentions learning for travel, work and study abroad, then gives a personal reason connected to communicating with a girlfriend. The visa-interview example also shows how English can be useful beyond simply travelling. However, the discussion is only partially developed. The view that language learning has broader benefits is not clearly explained with distinct reasons, and the opening claim about starting a business is not supported. Your own position appears mainly in the final sentence, rather than being stated and maintained clearly throughout. To strengthen the response, explain each side directly, add a relevant example for each, and state your opinion clearly in the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a recognisable movement from reasons for learning a language to your personal experience and a concluding general statement. Some linking words, such as “But,” “furthermore” and “overall,” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the response is presented as one long paragraph, and the ideas do not progress in a clear, controlled sequence. The extended account about your girlfriend, studies, visa and interview overwhelms the discussion of the two views. Connections between points are sometimes unclear, and “The lecture” does not fit the essay task. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, each view, your opinion and the conclusion; keep each paragraph focused and use clear references to link ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “foreign language,” “abroad,” “studies,” “business” and “visa.” These words help communicate the general subject, and the personal example gives you opportunities to express specific ideas. However, the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “people's learn,” “for start their own business,” “loveones” and “passed out the interview.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “hilights” and “thier,” also reduce precision. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases and check collocations and spelling. For example, use “learn a language to improve communication” and “pass an interview” rather than translating phrases word for word.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to express reasons and consequences using clauses with “because,” “when” and “that’s why,” so it is not limited entirely to short simple sentences. However, sentence control is weak, particularly in the long sentence beginning “i also have a girlfriend,” which joins many separate ideas without clear punctuation. There are frequent problems with verb forms and agreement, as in “she born,” “everyone have” and “she forced me to learn”; articles and sentence boundaries are also often missing or unclear. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise building shorter, accurate sentences first, then combine them with controlled subordinate clauses and check tense, agreement and punctuation.
