Student answer (Band 6.5)

People hold differing views on the purpose of learning another languages. Some people argue that main reason of learning a different language is for the purpose of travelling or working on that country, while others content that there are other reasons behind it. I firmly believe that there are other reasons involved behind learning foreign language such as entertainment, interest and cultural exposure.

On the one hand, people learn a language only because they want to make travelling more convenient and coordinate in work place. If a person want to travel in a different country and don't know their language, they may fell to communicate with the people. As a result, it can be difficult for that person to coordinate with local people while travelling. Language give the access to local culture and tradition which make travelling smooth and easier. Besides, on work place people need to communicate with colleague and express ideas which impossible without knowing the language. Without knowing the language, there will be communication gap among employees.

On the other hand, apart from the travel and work, there are several reasons involved in language learning. One possible reason might be curiosity that drives people to learn new language and cultures. Some people have interest to learn new things and explore the world so that they learn different languages and culture to satisfy their interest. Another reason can be for entertainment purpose. Entertainment industry has expand worldwide because of the emerging technology. People nowadays consume content of different countries such as Korean, Japanese, and Turkish which need the understanding of those languages.

In conclusion, travel and work can be one of the reasons of learning a different language, but there are a variety of reasons behind learning languages such as curiosity, entertainment and cultural factors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction and conclusion identify travel and work as reasons, while also supporting curiosity, entertainment and cultural exposure. The travel paragraph explains practical communication needs, and the examples of Korean, Japanese and Turkish media make the alternative view relevant. This meets the task well, but the ideas are not equally developed: the work-related point is asserted rather than illustrated, and “cultural exposure” is named more than explored. To strengthen the response further, explain one example in more depth—for instance, how learning a language helps someone understand a film or engage with another culture—and make the distinction between the two views more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents the issue and your position, two body paragraphs discuss the contrasting views, and a conclusion restates your main point. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening of the first body paragraph repeats the view rather than developing it immediately, and “Besides” introduces the workplace point without a strong link to the travel discussion. The conclusion also lists reasons without drawing together the contrast. Use more varied, precise transitions and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “communicate,” “local culture and tradition,” “curiosity,” and “entertainment industry,” so the main ideas are clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “communication gap” and “cultural exposure.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “coordinate in work place,” “content that,” and “entertainment purpose” do not sound natural in context. “Language” and “different languages” recur frequently, and “reasons” is repeated in the introduction and conclusion. Build precision by learning common combinations such as “communicate with colleagues,” “argue that,” and “for entertainment,” and vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives such as “motives” or “purposes.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures (“If a person want to travel…”) and a relative clause (“which make travelling smooth and easier”). The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, plurals and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “a person want” should be “a person wants,” “Language give” needs a singular verb, and “there are other reasons involved behind” has an awkward grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “Besides, on work place…” also needs a clearer structure. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check each sentence for a complete, natural grammatical pattern. More accurate control of these forms would make your complex sentences clearer.
