Student answer (Band 6.5)

One school of thought suggests learning a foreign language is only for the employment or the travel purpose while the other is of the opinion that there are other aspects to it. In my opinion, while it is incredibly important to learn a new language for work and mobility related aspects but it also brings some cultural and intellectual benefits to the individual.

Many folks consider a new language an essential for career advancement in a foreign land or just for the sake of travel. Bilingual or multilingual employees stand a better chance in bigger companies as they can communicate better than international clients. Apart from the work life, they can easily understand the native culture and their laws and make a better implementation of those. Toursits can make better use of native phrases to navigate the new culture and this can make communication effective with the local residents.

However, there is another group who believes there are other benefite of being a bilingual. Learning a new language rewires the brain, improving its focus and the long term memory. This also boosts self confidence. Language and culture are deeply connected. Learning a tongue allows people to get accustomed to a specific culture and its traditions. Many Universities and colleges often require foriegn language proficiency as part of the standard application.

In conclusion, while work and travel are the most important catalysts for leaning a new tongue but there are other factors which also stand a position in some way. R

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You discuss both views and state a clear position: language learning supports work and travel, but also brings cultural and intellectual benefits. The employment example about communicating with international clients and the points about memory, confidence, and university requirements are relevant. This covers the task, but the two sides are not developed equally: the work-and-travel paragraph gives several claims, while the wider benefits are listed more briefly. Some points, such as how language learning improves memory or why universities require proficiency, would be stronger with explanation or a specific example. Your conclusion restates your view, though it could more clearly weigh the two positions rather than simply summarising them.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Apart from the work life” and “However” help signal the movement between ideas, and the main progression is easy to follow. To make the organisation more controlled, group related points and explain how each supports the paragraph’s main idea; the second body paragraph moves quickly from cognitive benefits to culture and university applications. Some linking is mechanical, and the final “R” appears to be an accidental fragment that disrupts the ending. Use clearer references and a more complete concluding sentence to make the connections between ideas smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “career advancement,” “multilingual,” “native culture,” “long term memory,” and “language proficiency.” These choices help communicate relevant ideas, and attempts at less common vocabulary are evident. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “an essential,” “a better implementation of those,” and “stand a position.” There are also spelling errors in “Toursits,” “benefite,” “foriegn,” and “leaning,” which reduce precision. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; accurate, familiar phrasing is more effective than an ambitious expression used incorrectly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrastive opening and sentences with subordinate clauses, so the response shows some structural variety. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In the introduction, “while it is incredibly important … but it also brings” combines two contrasting structures; use either “while …, it also …” or “it is important …, but it also …”. The conclusion repeats this pattern with “while … but”. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, as in “a new language an essential,” and “Many Universities and colleges often require foriegn language proficiency” would benefit from more precise grammatical framing. Proofread for complete, well-formed clauses and consistent punctuation.
