Although there is a school of thought that say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country, an alternative perspective contends that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign landuage. While both arguments possess a certain degree of validity, I am firmly of the opinion that is the foreign language are not the only reasons for travel and work only it may help us in more way. This essay will critically examine both prespectives before elucidating why I subscribe to this particular standpoint.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You introduce both viewpoints and state that you support learning languages for reasons beyond travel and work. However, the response develops only the first view: it mentions communicating while travelling and finding local work, but does not explain other reasons or provide a relevant example. The second view and your own position therefore remain largely unsupported, so the task is addressed only partially. The response also contains 148 words, which is 102 words below the required minimum; 47 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. To improve, develop both sides in separate paragraphs, explain your opinion with specific reasons, and include a concrete example before concluding.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the debate, and “To commence with” signals the start of a supporting paragraph. This gives the reader some sense of direction. However, the essay stops before establishing a complete progression: there is no developed discussion of the alternative view or concluding paragraph. Within the body, several ideas are run together, especially the sentence beginning “there are several compelling arguments,” and the repeated references to what “some people say” do not clearly advance the argument. Use one paragraph for each viewpoint and a final paragraph for your opinion, with clear links between claims and explanations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of formal expressions, including “school of thought,” “alternative perspective,” “compelling arguments,” and “critically examine.” These show an effort to use language suited to an academic discussion. However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward, and spelling errors are noticeable: “landuage,” “prespectives,” “thinkes,” and “batter.” Phrases such as “in more way” and “for batter incom” also make parts of the meaning difficult to follow. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding formal phrases where they do not fit. Proofread spelling and word forms, and use precise expressions such as “earn a higher income” and “for several reasons.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The opening attempts complex sentence forms, for example, “Although there is a school of thought …, an alternative perspective contends …,” and “While both arguments …, I am firmly of the opinion ….” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent and many sentences contain errors that make the message harder to understand. Examples include “a school of thought that say,” “I am firmly of the opinion that is,” and “this are the points”; these involve agreement and sentence construction. The body also has a run-on sequence after “To commence with,” and sentence-initial “this” is not capitalised. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then check subject–verb agreement, articles, punctuation, and clause structure.
