IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's world, learning foreign language has become so normal for people around the world, some people have opinion that people spend so much of their time and effort to learn foreign language just because of travel or work, while other people have totally different thought that there are other reasons too. I truly beileve that both points are valid and true, but in my opinion the people who are aiming to learn foreign language for work and travel have higher percentage now a days.
Overall it's clear that learning foreign language has become so much important to survive in that country where you are going, no matter whatever the reason you are going for. Now if we talk about the people who think that there is only one reason and that is work and travel in my opinion it's 80% true. For instance if I talk about Pakistan every year thousands of students graduate from several fields and offical reports say that out of 5 students only a single student able to get a good job, now in this case that other 4 students will just think about to travel abroad and get a good life. Like if I talk about Germany it's so hard to get a good opportunity in that country without speaking german if you have to buy a single cup of coffee from a coffe shop you have to communicate in german with those people. Now on the other hand some people also think that learning foreign language contains other reason too, somehow this is true as well, because it can add additonal skill in your portfolio and you will feel more confident while communicating with those people in any part of the world.
In conculsion both of the opinions are true and valid.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present a position—that both views are valid, while work and travel are more common motivations—and give relevant examples, including employment prospects in Pakistan and the need to speak German in Germany. However, the discussion is uneven: the work-and-travel view receives most of the explanation, while the other reasons are only briefly mentioned as adding a skill and confidence. The claim that the first view is “80% true” is not clearly supported, and the conclusion simply repeats your opening position rather than drawing the discussion together. To strengthen the response, explain a distinct reason for learning languages beyond travel and work, such as understanding another culture or accessing literature, and develop how it benefits learners.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an introduction, a main discussion paragraph and a conclusion, and signposting such as “For instance” and “on the other hand” helps readers recognise the two views. However, the main paragraph contains several different points in a long sequence, so the contrast between the views and the progression of supporting ideas are not always clear. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, including “Now if we talk about” and “Like if I talk about Germany”; the conclusion is also very brief and adds little to the argument. Organise the two perspectives more distinctly, ideally in separate paragraphs, and use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports the relevant view.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “foreign language,” “opportunity,” “communicating” and “portfolio,” and the main ideas remain understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or unnatural, such as “people have opinion,” “other people have totally different thought” and “think about to travel abroad.” Spelling errors—including “beileve,” “offical,” “coffe” and “conculsion”—also make the writing less controlled. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad phrases such as “people think.” For example, you could describe learners as “motivated by employment opportunities” and introduce “cultural understanding” as a reason beyond practical travel or work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences and use clauses to explain examples, but control is inconsistent, and errors occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “learning foreign language has become so normal for people around the world, some people have opinion” joins clauses without suitable punctuation and omits articles. In “out of 5 students only a single student able to get a good job,” the verb “is” is missing; “the people who are aiming” also shifts awkwardly in tense and form. There are further problems with sentence boundaries and constructions such as “think about to travel.” Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled subordinate clauses, checking articles, verb forms and punctuation.
