Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the primary purpose of learning a second language is crucial when travelling and wroking in a foreign nation, while others believe that there are other reasons for learning a new language. Althought learning a second language is beneficial when relocating and working in the overseas nation, I believe there are other reasons for acquiring second language.

On the one hand. It is immensely significant to communicate in foreign language when moving to a new nation. In order to travel overseas, one need to be conversant with communication skills. Many states have their signposts written in their native language, thus the immigrants should know how to effectively speak with locals of foreign states. Furthermore, when working in foreign countries, it will be quick easier to share ideas in working places when employees communicate in one undertandable language.

On the other hand, there are many other benefits of learning non-native language. First of all, business transactions across the global are carried based on the regional blocks, therefore knowing the mode of communition would ease signing of cheques and understanding the monetary denominations of foreign currency. Moreover, having commucation skills in second language hepls on to easily fit to a foreign culture. For instance, natives who are bi-lingual can communicate with tourists who visit their country. This trend will see an increased number of tourists, leading to earning of foreign exchange used to uplift living standards

In conclusion, learning a foreign language should not only be aimed at working or travelling to overseas but also for business tranctions and cultural exchange. In my opinion, individuals need to acquire second language in order to manage language barriers when they relocate to new nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and give a position: the opening recognises travel and work as reasons, while the conclusion adds business and cultural exchange. The travel paragraph is relevant and includes examples such as reading signposts and communicating with local people. However, the discussion of the opposing view is less fully developed: the point about business transactions and currency is not clearly connected to why language learning is valuable, and the tourism example shifts towards benefits for a country rather than explaining an individual learner’s motivation. Your opinion is also somewhat mixed: you first say there are other reasons, but conclude that people need a language to manage barriers when relocating. Clarify your position and explain each reason with a more direct example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the main ideas generally progress logically. This already provides a coherent framework, but some links between claims need to be clearer. For example, the move from business transactions to signing cheques does not explain the connection between language ability and those activities, while the tourism example develops a different point. There are also occasional punctuation and spacing problems around transitions. Make each paragraph’s central idea explicit and use linking phrases to show how each example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “conversant,” “regional blocks,” “monetary denominations,” and “cultural exchange.” These choices show an effort to use language beyond basic terms, but several are inaccurate or unnatural in context, and spelling errors such as “wroking,” “commucation,” and “tranctions” are noticeable. Phrases including “quick easier,” “one undertandable language,” and “fit to a foreign culture” also make some meanings less clear. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, but greater accuracy and more natural collocations are needed. Prefer familiar, precise expressions when unsure, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation with “when working in foreign countries” and a result clause beginning “leading to.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “one need” requires subject–verb agreement, “when moving to a new nation” needs an article or plural form, and “learning a second language” is missing an article in places where it is used as a singular countable idea. The sentence beginning “having commucation skills in second language hepls on to…” is difficult to follow because its structure is incomplete or malformed. Review articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation so complex sentences remain controlled.
