IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
i think both are right but everyone has its own mindset because if any one want to go another foreign countary for studying or work so he/she should know that their language without that countary language he/she can not study nor find good job every countary has their own lànguage like USA/CANADA/UK and many more their embassy require ielts or other english language test and for job in germany german emmbassy need german language at least B2 if i go to germany for MBBS so german emmbassy and medical colleges need german language c1 or ç2 because after i will give treatment to most german people and my course also in german language so it is nasasary to me learn german language.if anyone learn foreign language example german language than apply to german company for job and there is another person whom don't know german language so compny give more marks tho that person who knows german language he/she can deal with costumer well

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views: the first part explains why language skills matter for studying or working abroad, while the later section gives wider reasons, such as understanding other cultures and accessing information online. Your opinion is also present in the final sentence, where you recommend learning several languages. However, the discussion is uneven and some claims are unclear or insufficiently supported. The examples about German requirements for medical study and employment are relevant, but the broader cultural and internet points are not fully explained, and the response does not clearly compare the two views. Develop each reason with a clear explanation and a specific example, then state your position more directly and consistently throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a recognisable movement from reasons for learning a language for work or study to broader cultural reasons, followed by your opinion. This gives the response some organisation. However, the ideas are presented in very long, largely unpunctuated blocks, so the reader has difficulty seeing where one point ends and another begins. Connections such as “we should learn foreign language because” help signal a new idea, but linking is limited and some references are unclear, including “they can even a simple things from internet.” Use separate paragraphs for each view and your opinion, and organise each paragraph around one main point. Shorter sentences and clearer links between examples and claims would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “foreign language,” “embassy,” “medical colleges,” “culture,” and “internet,” and you attempt more specific terms such as “treatment” and “deal with customers.” This shows a basic range suited to the subject. However, the vocabulary is often repetitive or imprecise, and frequent spelling errors can make meaning difficult to follow: examples include “countary,” “nasasary,” and “learin.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “give more marks to that person” and “read other languages book.” Build accuracy with common collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help express your ideas without relying repeatedly on “language,” “people,” and “good.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to express reasons and conditions, for example with “if anyone want to go” and “because after I will give treatment,” and you include some longer sentences to connect related ideas. However, control is limited: many sentences contain errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For instance, “everyone has its own mindset” and “he/she can not study nor find good job” show problems with agreement and article use, while the long opening sentence joins several complete ideas without clear punctuation. These errors often make the reader work to identify the intended meaning. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using controlled clauses and consistent punctuation.
