Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are many peoples in the world who say that the only reason for learning a language is in order to travel or for work purposes. In the following paragraph, i will elaborate the benefits and reasons of the above mention statement.

On the one hand, learning a foreign language have many benefits in every aspects of life. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and state your opinion that learning a foreign language is important for travel, work, and other benefits. The first body paragraph gives relevant examples, including ordering food abroad and workers learning Arabic or English for jobs in Gulf countries. The second introduces cognitive, cultural, and educational reasons, so the response addresses the full task. However, several points are listed rather than explained: for example, the claims about memory, technology, and research are not supported with specific examples. Your conclusion also returns mainly to travel and employment, so your position on the broader reasons could be clearer. Develop fewer ideas in more depth and make your own view explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “So, i conclude” help readers follow the discussion. However, some progression is mechanical, and the second body paragraph moves quickly between cognitive benefits, cultural understanding, technology, research, and education without showing how these points connect. The conclusion also repeats several ideas from the body rather than synthesising them. Use clearer links between related points and develop each paragraph around a smaller number of connected ideas. Check that references such as “these” and “it” clearly identify what they refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “cognitive tasks,” “concentration,” “cultural understanding,” and “job prospects.” These choices show an attempt to discuss more than basic travel and employment. However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “benefit,” “reasons,” and “language,” and several collocations or word choices are inaccurate or unclear. For example, “finding good jobs in multinational language” does not express the intended meaning, and “personal growth like reading books” is imprecise. Aim for more natural combinations and choose vocabulary that states each idea precisely. Proofread spelling and word forms, including “peoples” where “people” is intended.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional and explanatory structures such as “If an individual did not understand the language of a country then how he is able to survive in that country.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. Examples include “both statement have,” “learning a foreign language have,” and “in every aspects”; the conditional sentence also shifts awkwardly between “did not understand” and “is able.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly the repeated lowercase “i.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and keeping verb forms consistent, then revise complex sentences to ensure their clauses are grammatically complete.
