Student answer (Band 6.5)

There has been an ongoing debate regarding different purposes of learning a foreign language. Some people believe that the sole reason of learning a new lauguage is to travel or work in a foreign country.Others argue that there are various others reasons to learn foreign language.Considering both perspectives,I agree with the latter statement ,that there are numerous benefits of learning a new language.

Proponents of the view that the only reason people should learn a foreign language is that ,it is conducive to travel and work in other countries. There is no other advantage of knowing and speaking another language.People who want to explore different parts of the world need to communicate in order to stay there or to get work in that country.

On the other hand, some people argue that there are many other advantages of learning a foreign language too.To begin with, individulas who are multilingual are more likely to get jobs in many industries across the world.Employers often prefer candidates who are bilingual or multilingual. Moreover, learning a new language also improves memory .People who learn an entirely new language ,memorize new grammer rules, innotations, conotations and expressions that lead to greater brain functioning.Learning new languages may also delays the onset of dementia and alzhimers in older people.

Furthermore ,acquiring a new language enhance cognitive skills. Many educational institutes are integrating foreign languages in their curriculams to help students refine their cognitive abilities.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language serves numerous purposes. It should not only be confined to travel or work .Stepping into a new linguistic system fosters cultural appreciation ,open-mindedness and global awareness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a clear position in the introduction: you agree that language learning has purposes beyond travel and work. The essay also gives relevant supporting points, including employment opportunities, memory, cognitive skills, and cultural awareness. This meets the task well, and the conclusion reinforces your position. To strengthen the response further, develop the first view more fully: it is mainly explained as a need to communicate while travelling or seeking work, with little illustration of why these goals matter. Some claims in the second view, such as language learning delaying dementia, would also benefit from a brief example or qualification. More balanced development and specific support would make the discussion more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting the first view, a fuller paragraph for the opposing view, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “To begin with,” and “Furthermore” help show how points relate. The contrast between the two positions is also clear. However, the first body paragraph is much shorter and less developed than the second, so the discussion feels uneven. Some transitions are formulaic, and several ideas in the second body paragraph are placed one after another without explaining their relationship. Grouping related benefits and adding a sentence that links each example to your argument would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “multilingual,” “cognitive skills,” “cultural appreciation,” and “global awareness.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “onset of dementia,” though some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “sole reason of learning,” “various others reasons,” and “greater brain functioning” are not natural formulations. Spelling errors such as “individulas,” “grammer,” and “alzhimers” also reduce accuracy. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, for example “reasons for learning” and “improve cognitive function.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “People who want to explore different parts of the world…” and a purpose clause in “to help students refine their cognitive abilities.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “learning a foreign language. Some people” needs sentence spacing and punctuation, while “learning a new language also improves memory” is followed by a comma before “memorize” that incorrectly separates the subject from its verb. There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “learning new languages may also delays” and “acquiring a new language enhance.” Review subject–verb agreement, modal verb patterns, and sentence punctuation. More consistently accurate control of these structures would improve the clarity of your otherwise varied sentences.
