Student answer (Band 6.0)

The world is full of interesting and new foreign languages to learn, some think that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others believe that there are other reasons to learn a foreign language.

On one hand, learning a foreign language to travel to a country or to work in it is very important for the flexibility of life and to make daily life easier, for example, if an individual was on a touristic travel in Italy and he got lost, he can be put in situations where he can't use his phone, such as its battery died or it went missing, being able to talk to the locals in that area is calming and very helpful. It is the same for work in foreign countries, many companies require a certain understanding of the local language in order to facilitate the communication between collegues and to maintain easy access to documents or projects written in that language.

On the other hand, traveling or working may not be the only reasons to learn a new language, there are other opportunities such as having online friends fromp other countries. For instance, i have had an online friend from South Africa since 2023, she was impressed by my Arabic language and the pronunciations of the letters, as a result, she learnt some arabic phrases to be able to communicate with me daily, vis a vis, i have learnt some South African words and we kept teaching each other new sentences which had decreased the distance between us.

In my opinion, I believe that i should not limit my language knowledge in only traveling or working, instead, i choose to widen my options and learn as many languages as I can for deeper puposes, either they were to improve communication skills, or develop personal growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and give a clear personal position: travel and work are useful reasons, but language learning can also build friendships and personal growth. The Italy example makes the travel point concrete, and the online friendship illustrates a reason beyond practical necessity. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first view receives examples for both travel and work, while the broader benefits in the final paragraph are mostly asserted rather than explained. Your conclusion also introduces “improve communication skills” and “personal growth” without showing how these benefits arise. Develop one or two wider reasons with explanation or a specific example to make the response more fully supported. The 22 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. “On one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, and examples are placed with the relevant points. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The first body paragraph contains a long chain of clauses about getting lost, phone problems, and speaking to locals, which makes the main point harder to track. “Vis a vis” does not clearly express the intended reciprocal learning, and the final paragraph repeats the opinion rather than synthesising the discussion. Use shorter sentence units, clearer references, and transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “facilitate the communication,” “local language,” “pronunciations,” and “personal growth.” These choices help express both practical and social reasons for learning languages. There are also several inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “flexibility of life” does not naturally convey the intended benefit, “touristic travel” is unusual, and “decreased the distance” is unclear in this context. Spelling and word-form slips such as “collegues,” “puposes,” and “arabic” also reduce control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and capitalization; this will make your ideas sound more precise without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if an individual was…”) and clauses explaining results. Meaning is generally understandable, but some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. The opening joins two complete thoughts with a comma, and the travel example becomes a long sentence with several clauses that are difficult to manage. In “if an individual was… he got lost,” the tense sequence is inconsistent for a hypothetical situation; use “were” and “got” or “were to get.” The final sentence also has an awkward “either they were” construction. Practise separating long sentences and checking clause structure, tense consistency, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex grammar.
