Student answer (Band 4.5)

in my opinion, learning foregin language is not only in order to travel to or to work in foregin country, it is type of skill. we learn some thing new beside our language. we also have interset to do something new.the skills we learn not only for job, work and for travelling. some people learning foregin languages to higher education from abroad, they didn't learn for work or travelling. some people have interset to do something new because they get bored from learning same thing. for example, in pakistan mostly people spaek only urdu and english . they have no knowledge about other languages.when they go to foreign country they face many problems. so, it is necessary to learn about foreign languages.

in second statement : these are not only reason why someone should learn foreign language. they are many reasons for learning foreign language. foreign language is very helpful in our professional life. when we go to any foreign country foreign language is very helpful for us.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You give a relevant opinion that language learning has purposes beyond travel and employment, and mention higher education and personal interest. However, the discussion is only minimal: the view that travel and work are key reasons is not clearly explained, while the opposing view receives only brief examples. The Pakistan example suggests practical difficulties abroad, but it does not fully develop either side or show how the example supports your position. Your own opinion appears at the start, but it needs to be stated and supported more clearly throughout. The response also does not meet the required minimum of 250 words. To improve, explain both views in separate, developed points and add specific examples and reasoning for each.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into two paragraphs, and phrases such as “for example” and “in second statement” signal a shift or an illustration. However, ideas are not arranged in a clear, coherent progression: the first paragraph moves between personal interest, education, and problems abroad, while the second repeats that foreign languages are helpful without developing a distinct point. Connections between sentences are often unclear, and the final paragraph does not provide a conclusion. Some linking is also mechanical or awkward. Plan one paragraph for each view, connect each example directly to its main idea, and finish with a short conclusion that restates your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use a small set of relevant topic words, including “foreign language,” “higher education,” “professional life,” and “travelling,” so the general subject is understandable. However, vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with “foreign language” and “helpful” appearing several times, and some word choices or collocations are unclear, such as “get bored from learning same thing” and “higher education from abroad.” Spelling errors, including “foregin,” “interset,” and “spaek,” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider range of precise expressions for reasons and benefits, such as cultural understanding, academic opportunities, and career prospects, and check spelling and natural word combinations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response mainly uses short, simple statements, with a few attempts to join ideas using “because” and “when.” These attempts show some range, but sentence structures are often incomplete or inaccurate. For example, “some people learning foreign languages to higher education from abroad” lacks a correctly formed main verb, and “they are many reasons” has an incorrect subject–verb construction. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent, as in “in foreign country” and “some thing new.” Capitalisation and punctuation are unreliable, particularly at sentence beginnings and around the colon after “in second statement.” Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled complex sentences with clear subjects and verbs.
