IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays people argue about the use of foreign language, some say that it is either for a job in another country or for international visits while other's think there are multiple reasons for learning a new language. In my opinion, both perspectives hold weightage but I am more inclined towards the second view.

Firstly, a certain group of people believe that learning a new dialect is completely based upon the need to communicate during foreign trips. As they believe that by doing this they will be able to spend their recreational time more comfortably. While, some also support this view that working in a foreign country is the only reason someone would leave their native language and learn a new one. For example, if some one is proficient in speaking Arabic he/she will be able to perform Umrah in a better way.

On the other hand, some individuals do not confine learning another language with travel or work. From their perspectives, being bilingual or multilingual is a blessing that everyone should be a part of. Furthermore, some people take it as a recreational and fun activity and are more inclined towards spending their time learning a new dialect rather than indulging in illegal activities.

In my opinion, i am more bent towards the second view that language learning should not be limited to a couple of things but should be explored more and more often. I also believe that schools and governments should play a key role in this and hold seminars and lectures explaining about the advantages of being multilingual so that more and more people are attracted towards it.

To conclude, I would like to highlight that both the views are equally popular amongst general public as some may find their argument of travel and jobs being more acknowledged while other may find support of their view. I personally am in favor of the second perspective and believe learning an international language should be prioritized from a young age .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a consistent preference for learning languages for reasons beyond travel and work. The examples about communicating on trips and performing Umrah help illustrate the first view, while your points about enjoyment and multilingualism address the second. However, the discussion is uneven: the travel and employment reasons are explained briefly, and the second view relies on broad claims such as “being bilingual or multilingual is a blessing” rather than showing specific benefits. The reference to avoiding “illegal activities” is not clearly connected to language learning. To develop the response further, explain concrete advantages—such as understanding other cultures or accessing education—and support each view with a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “While, some also support this view” is not smoothly joined to the preceding idea, and “some may find their argument … while other may find support of their view” is difficult to interpret. Your opinion is also repeated in both the fourth paragraph and the conclusion. Improve cohesion by making links between ideas more precise, using clear pronoun references, and ensuring each paragraph adds a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “proficient,” “recreational,” “multilingual,” and “prioritized,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “hold seminars and lectures.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “hold weightage,” “leave their native language,” and “confine learning another language with travel or work.” “Dialect” is also not the right term for a foreign language in this context. These choices make parts of the response less precise. Aim for natural combinations and consistent terminology, for example, “have merit,” “learn a foreign language,” and “limit language learning to travel or work.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “if,” “that,” and “so that,” and most of your meaning can be followed. Some sentence structures, however, are faulty or incomplete. “While, some also support this view…” is a fragment, and “being bilingual or multilingual is a blessing that everyone should be a part of” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the ideas. There are also errors in capitalization and punctuation, such as lowercase “i,” the comma after “While,” and the missing full stop at the end. Review sentence boundaries and clause structure, and check capitalization and punctuation carefully; this will make your varied structures more controlled.
