Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, many people believe that the one and foremost reason to learn a foreign language could be for travelling and working overseas, while others argue that there might be other reasons for someone to learn a foreign language. In my opinion, I strongly agree with the former statement because many people learn international language just for the sake of moving and settling abroad.
On the one hand, a significant proportion of people try to learn a foreign language. This is because they search for the better alternatives for their career professions. These alternatives can be moving abroad in order to persue higher education or working there. To understand the culture and handling their daily errands, they need to completely comprehend the local language of their choosen country. In this way, they can communicate easily with them, while continuing their careers. For example, many Asian people who get admissions in the European universities, learn their native language before commuting.
On the other hand, there can be other reasons a person should learn a foreign language. Many people have interests in learning something new, so they opt for learning a new language. They use different online resources widely available to learn the basics. For instance, the Duolingo application has listed more than forty languages and it's completely free of charge for learning a new language. Similarly, many universities courses offer foreign language courses, which gives the chance to many students for studying new languages.
In conclusion, although many people think people learn an international language for the sake of traveling and working abroad, others choose to learn by interest and through their curriculum.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views: the first body paragraph explains language learning for education and employment abroad, while the second gives personal interest and university courses as other motives. Your own position is stated in the introduction, but it is not fully sustained: you agree that travel and work are the main reasons, yet the conclusion simply restates both sides without clarifying why you favour the first. Some support is also under-developed. For example, the point about Asian students learning a language before studying in Europe needs a clearer link to travel or work, and the discussion of personal interest could explain its value more fully. Develop the comparison and make your final opinion explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For instance, the example about Asian students follows the point about education and employment but does not clearly show whether they learn the host country’s language or another language. The conclusion also repeats the two positions rather than bringing the argument together. Use referencing more precisely and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “higher education,” “daily errands,” “local language,” and “online resources.” There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “significant proportion” and “career professions,” though the latter is an unnatural collocation. Several word choices or forms reduce precision: “international language” is not a natural substitute for “foreign language” here, and “commuting” does not mean travelling to a country to study. Spelling errors such as “persue” and “choosen” are noticeable but do not prevent understanding. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling; precise vocabulary will make your examples clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because they search for…” and “although many people think…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “many universities courses” needs a possessive or plural form (“many universities’ courses” or “many university courses”), and “which gives the chance to many students” has an unclear agreement and article pattern. In “they need to completely comprehend,” the infinitive placement is possible but less natural than “fully understand.” Review noun phrases, articles, and agreement, and vary sentence structures while keeping them controlled. These improvements would make the writing more consistently accurate.
