Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this age of time foreign language is an important tool to communicate with others especially English. English is known as the gloal language almost evey country has special courses of English in their educational system to teach English to their students. In Pakistan the English courses have started from a very basic classes so that the residents of Pakstan can learn English. The purpoe of English language in Pakistan is not just only to travel or to work in foreign country, it is also about to make them ready and confident to face the world and communicate with other people. Here in my country Pakistan chinese language is also added as a part of curriculam to enhance the communication skills of students. Yes other than communication and networking many people learn specific foreign languages for the reason to work in foreign country. Many people in Pakistan learn Arabic to work in Gulf countrries. Right now many students which are willing for studies in abroad are learning many foreign languages like german language, spanish etc.

Yes it might be true that these two reasons are not quite solid reasons to learn a foreign language. In first world countries many people think that it is not necessary to learn the foreign language. For exmaple, for natives of Europe and America the need for learning of foreign language might not be important, because for them the foreign language is hindi, urdu, persian etc. If they have to travel in these countries for any reason either to travel or for work they do not have to learn the native language of that country, because the people in that country can speak english.

I think that for the third world countries or developing countries it is imporatant to learn the foreign language to make their place in developed countries or to make themselves updated by world. They are in need of learning foreign languages if they want to work or travel in other developed countries. In Pakistan many people are learning English just to study abroad. Other than this reason here many people are working for foreign clients so they have to be fluent in english to communicate with theirclients.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a personal position: you explain that language learning can support communication and confidence, while also describing study, travel, and employment abroad. The examples from Pakistan, including English courses, Arabic for Gulf employment, and English for overseas clients, are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view—that travel and work are the only reasons—is not clearly explained as a distinct argument, and the claim about people in Europe and America not needing other languages is broad and insufficiently supported. Your opinion also shifts: you say language learning has wider purposes, but later emphasise its necessity for developing countries to work or travel abroad. State your position clearly and develop each side with a specific explanation and example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with the importance of languages, moves to examples of work and study, and ends with your view about developing countries. Basic linking expressions such as “Yes,” “For example,” and “Other than this reason” help show relationships between points. However, the overall progression is not consistently clear. Several different ideas are crowded into the opening paragraph, and the second paragraph’s discussion of Europe and America does not connect smoothly to the earlier argument. Repeated transitions such as “other than” also make the links feel mechanical, while references like “these two reasons” are not fully clear. Use separate paragraphs for each view and your opinion, and make each paragraph develop one central point in a logical sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “communication skills,” “educational system,” “networking,” and “foreign clients,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “foreign language,” “learn,” and “people,” and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “in this age of time,” “make their place in developed countries,” and “updated by world.” Spelling errors—including “gloal,” “evey,” “curriculam,” and “imporatant”—are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, “in today’s world” is more natural than “in this age of time,” and “keep up with global developments” expresses your intended meaning more clearly than “updated by world.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because” and “if,” but the range is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction occur frequently: “a very basic classes” has an article–plural mismatch, “the foreign language is hindi” is awkwardly formed, and “many students which are willing for studies in abroad” has problems with the relative clause and preposition pattern. Some sentences also run together, as in the opening paragraph, making relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly controlled subordinate clause, and check articles, singular/plural forms, and punctuation. Greater control of these patterns would make your meaning easier to follow.
