IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that a new lanuguage should be learned for travellling or working in a different country, while others believe that there are more reasons to learn a language. Although both sides have their merits, I think that it is better to learn a language when it is essential because an individual can only get better in a language if they continue to speak it.
A language is a form of communication through which two parties understand each other. During travel or work, a person requires to memorize new words so he/she is in a better position to adjust in the new environment. Such a learning is put into practice and continues to build upon it. With regular conversations, the vocabulary increases and fluency is achieved. For instance, my husband learned few arabic words and some general conversation statements so that he can initially interact well within the company, which made the transition from Pakistan, a little less challenging.
However, in recent times, many people prefer to learn a foreign language like the Chinese, French, German, in order to enhance their learning capacity. It is well-research that new pathways in the brain are formed, when a different language is learnt. This approach helps people to upskill their talent. For example, some schools in Pakistan offer children to learn French as a language in order help them sharpen their memory and increase their confidence through public speaking.
Both the aspects offer varied benefits, I still believe that the only way to remember a language is when it is put in some practical application otherwise it is forgotton.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and state a position: you recognise practical reasons for learning a language, then present cognitive and personal-development benefits. The examples about your husband’s Arabic and schools offering French help make the points relevant. However, the discussion is uneven. The travel/work view is explained through practice and adjustment, while the alternative view is mainly supported by claims about brain pathways, memory and confidence, with little explanation of why these benefits make language learning worthwhile in their own right. Your conclusion also shifts towards saying practical application is the “only way” to remember a language, which does not fully match your opening position that learning is better when essential. Develop the second view further and make your opinion consistent throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding statement. The contrast signalled by “Although” and “However” helps readers follow the discussion, and examples are placed alongside the relevant ideas. Some links between sentences are less smooth or precise. For example, “Such a learning is put into practice and continues to build upon it” has an unclear reference, so the reader must infer what “it” means. The final paragraph begins “Both the aspects” but does not clearly connect the two views to your stated opinion. Use more precise referencing and make the conclusion synthesise the discussion rather than introduce a stronger claim than the introduction.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “adjust in the new environment,” “regular conversations,” “fluency,” “enhance their learning capacity” and “public speaking.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language is attempted. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “lanuguage,” “travellling,” “arabic” and “forgotton.” Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise: “memorize new words” does not clearly express the broader process of learning to communicate, and “upskill their talent” is awkward in this context. Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, and choose vocabulary that expresses your intended meaning precisely rather than relying on broad phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“Although both sides have their merits”) and a relative clause (“through which two parties understand each other”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “a person requires to memorize” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “my husband learned few Arabic words” needs an article before “few.” In “in order help them,” the infinitive marker is missing; “it is forgotton” also has an incorrect passive form. The final sentence joins two independent ideas without clear punctuation. Review verb patterns, articles, passive constructions and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied structures.
