Student answer (Band 5.5)

One idea of learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. But Others say the scope of language learning goes far beyond that. I am a strong supporter of the latter opinion.

The language is a main pillar of the society. A society depends on communication with each other where language become a vital tool. Without a language, many activities in the civilization will be a challange.

We have to accept the practical requirement of learning of a foreign language for travelling or working in a differant country. It opens oppertunity to grab more information through discussions, readings and through meeting differant people. Usually employers prefer to hire an employee familiar with native language. Therefore the fluency in a foreign language simply helps you to enjoy your trip and to make it a memorable one. On the other hand language skill becomes a strong positive in your employment interview. Considering above we can agree that learning a foreign language a positive mark for your foreign travel or grabbing an employment oppertunity.

But truely learning a foreign language goes far beyond that. Learning their language mean your are reading a foreign culture. People understand each other through communication, by sharing ideas. Therefore the best way to uderstand a differant culture is by opening a communication path. The best communication path is learning native language,

By learning the common language of the country, you will be able to get first hand expirience. One can make more close friendships and lasting relationship with people you meet. The most important part is integration with new society. Language can be a bridge to connect a foreigner with natives.

As such, i strongly belive learning a foreign language gives you a wider oppertunity to integrate with new society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and state a clear position in the opening and conclusion: you support reasons beyond travel and employment. The practical case is relevant, with points about communicating while travelling and employers valuing language skills; the wider case includes cultural understanding, friendship, and integration. This covers the task, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first is mostly asserted, and examples or explanation of how language skills help at work remain general. The claim that language is “a main pillar of the society” also shifts toward language in general rather than directly explaining why an individual should learn a foreign language. Develop each reason with a specific example and clearer links to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on practical reasons, a paragraph on broader benefits, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “But” help signal the contrast. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear or repetitive. The opening of the second paragraph discusses society and communication generally before the essay turns to travel and work, and the practical paragraph repeats the idea that language helps with travel and employment. Some links are awkward, such as “Considering above,” while the final paragraph’s ideas about experience, friendship, and integration could be ordered more deliberately. Group related points and use clearer references so each paragraph develops one central idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “fluency,” “communication,” “culture,” “integration,” and “lasting relationship.” These choices show an adequate range and help convey the main ideas. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations reduce accuracy, for example “oppertunity,” “differant,” “grab more information,” and “a strong positive in your employment interview.” Repetition of “language,” “communication,” and “foreign” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural academic combinations and check spelling carefully; for instance, explain that language proficiency can “improve employment prospects” rather than describing it as a “positive” in an interview. More precise vocabulary would make your arguments clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including cause-and-effect sentences with “Therefore” and conditional phrasing such as “By learning the common language of the country, you will be able to…”. The main message is generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “language become a vital tool,” “Learning their language mean your are reading,” and “learning a foreign language a positive mark.” Some sentence boundaries and punctuation are also weak, as in the comma after “language” at the end of a sentence. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and ensuring each sentence has a complete, correctly formed clause. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied attempts more effective.
