IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The question is whether source of learning foreign language is only to visit the other countries and talk with other people while other argue that these are not only sources to learn new language . I strongly believe that we can learn foreign language without visiting other countries . In this essay I will examine the both views and my own opinion .

people say that we can learn foreign language only if we travel to another countries because when we travel to another country we can easily learn their language in the very short period because we have to speak with other people for various purpose .For example when we work in other country we have to speak with people for many purpose like in the term of work or hang up with each other although at starting we are not well in their language ,in the passage of time we can easily understand and talk with them frequently .

Other people argue that we can learn without visiting foreign country .I strongly believe on this idea we can learn foreign language without travel to other countries because now internet give us a lot of opportunities to learn any language without going anywhere . for instance in this era because of technology we can learn any language .like there are plenty of websites there we can easily learn and practice the language .For example if we want to learn English language we can easily find many podcast on you tube there are also many experts on you tube who gave lectures about English and we can learn it .

In conclusion , for learning foreign language we need to talk with foreign people and also learn from internet that is most rapid way of learning new language.

Use clearer referencing and vary transitions; also organise each body paragraph around one main point followed by its explanation and example.

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “foreign language,” “opportunities,” “technology,” and “practice.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “various purpose” and “in the passage of time,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “hang up with each other” for socialising, “podcast on you tube,” and “experts … who gave lectures.” The repeated use of “learn,” “language,” and “people” also limits variety. Build a more precise range of collocations for language learning and travel, and check word forms and spelling, including “YouTube.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a concession with “although.” This shows some range, but complex sentences are often difficult to control, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “when we travel to another country we can easily learn their language” has an unclear pronoun reference, while “now internet give us” has an article and subject–verb agreement problem. There are also errors in plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “many purpose” and the long sentence beginning “For example when we work.” Practise accurate agreement, articles, and punctuation, and divide long sentences into shorter, complete units.
