Student answer (Band 5.0)

Over the years, the trend of learning foreign languages has been increased. People are taking interests in learning more than one languages. But this topic also give rise to some discussions between people. Some people say that the sole reason for learning a foreign language is either to travel or to work in that country. Others say that these are not the only reasons for the purpose of why one should be learning a different language.

Langauge is the mode of communication among people and different countries have their own way of communication. It is true, that if someone wants to travel or to work in an other country they need to learn their things, especially language. So they can carry out their normal functions in that country. Some countries that allow international students to study in their borders also has a requirement of language proficiency and it's same for the person that wants to work. But despite language being a requirement to live and travel to certian countries, it should not be the only purpose. Language language itself is very interesting and some people likes to speak different langauges. In my opinion, language is a certain thing that instantly makes you feel connected to the person in the first meeting. Imagine if you are not able to understand what a person wants to say or is saying.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You introduce both views and give a personal position, particularly when you argue that language can create a connection between people. However, the discussion is only partial: the travel/work view is explained with general points about everyday needs and language requirements, while the alternative reasons are barely developed beyond finding languages interesting and feeling connected. The final example beginning “Imagine if…” is unfinished, so it does not support your opinion with a complete example. The response also contains 218 words, below the required 250; this limits the space available to explain and support the ideas. Develop both sides more fully and add a relevant, complete example, such as learning a language to understand another culture or literature.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic overall shape: an introduction, a paragraph discussing practical reasons, and a shift to your view using “But despite…”. This helps the reader identify the main topic. However, the progression is limited because the response ends before the argument is completed, and there is no concluding paragraph to restate your position. Some links are awkward or repetitive, such as “But this topic also give rise…” and the repeated use of “language” in “Language language itself…”. The final “Imagine if…” sentence is not followed by an explanation, leaving the point unresolved. Use clearer paragraphing to separate the two views, connect each example to its claim, and finish with a concise conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “foreign languages,” “language proficiency,” “international students,” and “connected,” so the reader can follow the general subject. There are also attempts to express abstract ideas, such as language as a “mode of communication.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. Examples include “taking interests,” “learn their things,” and “for the purpose of why”; these make some phrases unnatural or unclear. Spelling errors such as “Langauge,” “certian,” and “langauges” are noticeable, and “language” is repeated several times close together. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; vocabulary suggestions below offer practical alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if someone wants to travel or to work…” and a contrast introduced by “despite.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. For example, “the trend … has been increased” uses an incorrect verb construction, “more than one languages” has a number-agreement error, and “Some countries … also has” has subject–verb disagreement. Articles and sentence structure also need attention in “in an other country” and “Imagine if you are not able to understand what a person wants to say or is saying,” which is left without a complete follow-up. Practise accurate agreement and verb forms, and check that each sentence is complete.
