Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that people should learn a foreign language only for practical purposes like employment or travel. However, others believe that there are many other important motives to study a new language. In my opinion, while career benefits are significant, learning a language is also highly beneficial for personal growth and brain health.

On the one hand, many individuals believe that people learn their second and third language just for the great job opportunities in a foreign country. They believe that learning foreign language is the only reason to develop practical purposes, for instance, having a good job in other countries and for the travel in foreign countries; moreover, when someone wants to make career in European countries they should definitely learn foreign language because in European countries has the huge language barriers.

On the other hand, others say that practical purposes are not the only reason to learn different languages they believe that it has so many other benefits. For example, the first benefit is easier travel you can order food, ask for directions, and talk to local people without using translation apps. Second, cultural understanding, you can enjoy foreign movies, music, and books in their original form. Third, stronger brain, scientists prove that learning a new language improves memory and problem-solving skills.

In my opinion learning a foreign language is not only in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. There are so many usefull benefits and my personal favorite is global friendships, It helps you connect and make friends with people from different countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the introduction recognises practical motives, while the conclusion argues that language learning also supports global friendships. The response includes relevant examples, such as employment abroad, communicating with local people, and accessing films and books in their original form. However, the first body paragraph is less fully developed: it largely repeats the practical-purpose view and does not explain travel and work as distinct reasons in much detail. The second paragraph offers several benefits, but the claims about brain health and friendships would be stronger with a brief explanation or specific example. Develop each side more evenly and make the reasoning behind your position more explicit. The response meets the stated length requirement; 11 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” helps readers follow the discussion. The sequence of examples in the second body paragraph is also easy to understand. However, some links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “First,” “Second,” and “Third,” and the long sentence in the first body paragraph joins several points with “moreover” without clearly showing how they relate. The final paragraph introduces global friendships but does not connect this idea back to the earlier discussion. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point progressively.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “career benefits,” “cultural understanding,” “problem-solving skills,” and “global friendships.” These phrases help communicate several relevant reasons for learning languages. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “develop practical purposes,” “make career,” and “stronger brain.” “Useful” is also misspelled as “usefull.” The repeated use of “foreign language” and “benefits” limits variety, while “European countries” is used broadly without adding much precision. Aim for more natural combinations and vary references to language learning, for example by using “language acquisition” or “studying another language” where appropriate. These improvements would make your meaning more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast in the opening (“while career benefits are significant”) and a reason introduced by “because.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, articles, agreement, and punctuation. For example, “learning foreign language” needs an article, and “in European countries has the huge language barriers” has an unclear subject and incorrect agreement. The sentence beginning “For example, the first benefit…” runs several points together, while “In my opinion learning…” needs punctuation after the introductory phrase. Practise building complete clauses and checking articles and subject–verb agreement. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside varied sentence structures, would strengthen the response.
