Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many people have different opinions in learning a different language rather than their mother tongue. As some individuals claim that the people only tend to learn a new language only because of the reason that they are travelling to another country for study or work but others claim that the mentioned reasons are not only the once that makes a person learn a different language. This essay will discuss the fact that why do people actually learn a new language . For example travelling or work purpose to another country or as a hobby to learn new things.

Many people learn new languages specially for travelling to another country because of work purpose or for study pupose. The increasing amount of students who are moving to abroad for their higher studies is significantly a famous reason for people to learn a new language other than that atleast in my country and the people that I have seen does not have other reasons to learn a new language outside of their own mother tongue. For example: Many people who tends to go to Germany for their higher studies learn the native language.

Unlike the work and study purpose there are some people who learns a new language as a hobby or as a reflection of loving a culture. Some people are very enthusiastic through learning new things so they learn a new language as a hobby and some other learn a new language because they simply loved the culture by watching a movie, series or by reading a book. For example: Many people watches Korean Drama now a days and learns the Korean language because they love the culture.

In conclusion, the reason of learning a language to move abroad outweighs the other reasons. Moreover, people mostly learn other language for moving abroad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views: the first body paragraph explains learning for overseas study or work, while the second gives personal interest and cultural appreciation as other motives. Your examples of students going to Germany and viewers learning Korean help make these points relevant. However, the response only partly fulfils the task because the reasons are briefly stated rather than explained in depth, and the first view is treated mainly as study or work rather than travel more broadly. Your own position is also not fully clear: the conclusion says moving abroad outweighs other reasons, but this is not developed or clearly supported in the essay. State your view directly and explain why you consider one set of reasons more important, using a specific supporting example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. This makes the overall arrangement easy to follow. The contrast between the views is signalled by “Unlike the work and study purpose,” and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear, such as the long opening sentence beginning “As some individuals claim,” and the conclusion repeats the idea of moving abroad without drawing the discussion together. Referencing is occasionally vague, as in “the mentioned reasons” and “the people that I have seen.” Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports; vary linking expressions rather than relying on repeated “because” and “for example.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “mother tongue,” “higher studies,” “hobby,” and “culture.” The examples also show an attempt to use more specific language, such as “native language” and “Korean language.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which makes some sentences less natural. For instance, “the only reason … only because of the reason” repeats the same idea, while “a reflection of loving a culture” does not express the intended meaning clearly. Spelling errors such as “pupose” and “atleast” also affect accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling, word forms, and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because” and “who,” and the main message is generally understandable. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, and verb forms occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to read. For example, “This essay will discuss the fact that why do people actually learn” uses an incorrect embedded-question structure, while “some people who learns” and “Many people watches” have subject–verb agreement errors. The opening sentence is also awkwardly constructed, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Practise building accurate complex sentences, especially with relative clauses and embedded questions, and check that each subject agrees with its verb before submitting.
