Student answer (Band 6.0)
Certain people believe that travelling or working in a foreign country is the only reason that leads one to learn a different language. However, some people contradict saying that there are many other reasons that convince an individual to learn a foreign language.
In my opinion, there can be multiple reasons for one to learn a new language. Whereas, many people want to learn new languages in order to elevate their exposure. Others do so as its a hobby for them.
The former statement is true to some extent as a large number of individuals tend to learn a foreign language only when they have to travel or work in a relevent country. They want to communicate well in the new environment without feeling leftout. Moreover, there are many foreign companies that demands language proficiency in order to give jobs to foreign people. For instance, my friend learned Italian because he got a job offer from Italian company that demanded Italian proficiency.
On the other hand, the latter stance cannot be neglected due to its significance. Some people enjoy learning a new language even when they do not need it. The desire to communicate with people thoughout the world convinces them to do so. Others do it because they find a sense of joy, productivity and self-growth while learning a foreign language. For example, one of my colleages learned several languages including Spanish, French etc. beacuse its a hobby for her.
As far as my opinion is concerned, I agree with the latter stance as there are many people who enjoy learning a new language and do this only to improve their knowledge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and make your own position clear: you acknowledge that travel and employment motivate language learning, then state that you agree there are other reasons. The examples of your friend learning Italian for a job and your colleague learning languages as a hobby are relevant and help illustrate the contrast. However, the first view is developed mainly through communication and employment, while the broader claim that people learn to “elevate their exposure” is not explained clearly. Your conclusion repeats your opinion but does not draw together the reasons discussed. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its value, and make the distinction between practical and personal motivations more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “For instance” help readers follow the discussion, and the progression from practical to personal reasons is logical. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, some transitions feel formulaic, and the opening of the opinion paragraph (“Whereas, many people…”) does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. The final paragraph also repeats the position rather than synthesising the discussion. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “language proficiency,” “communicate,” “self-growth,” and “significance.” These choices allow you to express both practical and personal motivations. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “elevate their exposure,” “a relevant country,” and “the latter stance cannot be neglected due to its significance.” Spelling errors, including “relevent,” “leftout,” “thoughout,” and “colleages,” also reduce accuracy. The range is adequate, but control of phrasing is uneven, which keeps the vocabulary from sounding consistently natural. Prioritise common, precise collocations and proofread spelling; avoid using formal-sounding phrases unless their meaning is clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Whereas” and a reason clause in “because he got a job offer.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the overall argument remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors persist, however. “There are many foreign companies that demands” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Others do so as its a hobby” needs a possessive form and clearer sentence construction. The opening “Whereas” sentence is also incomplete as written, and punctuation around introductory phrases is sometimes awkward. Work on agreement, complete clause structure, and apostrophes, while retaining the variety of sentence patterns you already attempt.
